Sure wish I had another small tractor like my Farmall BA

Mowed hay with the BA the other day and used just a little over a gal. of gas. Sure would be nice to have another tractor in that size range to rake the hay with. Been using a A/C WD45 to rake with but it likes the fuel a bit more then I like. And I do not like the Farmall Hs for raking with oh well maybe need to see if I can get the A/C C back up and running soon.

I have a 6 ft woods belly mower on a Farmall C and I like the fact that is uses about the same amount of gas that a lawn mower would use and it's more comfortable to ride on. Beats a bouncy lawn mower not to mention you are a greater distance from the dirt and dust a mower may stir up.

Another thing I like is you can mow grass that's about 10 inches tall without a problem, just raise the mower a little. You would burn the belts on a riding mower.

I rake hay with my 971D, mostly in 9th gear, it just sips fuel. Probably half what my gas 901 used when I used to rake with her.

Plus on that riding mower you cut what 42 inches and on that C you cut 6 foot and that is a whole lot more grass cut for about the same fuel used

Maybe your 45 needs to be looked at, I raked with a 45, and in general that is about the most fuel efficent gasoline engine I ever had. Might be as simple as the carb needs adjusting, do a compression check if you can too. Even if it needs a complete rebuild, it would be well worth the money, and you can never replace one for the same money.

901 gas but what model was it??? Ya a diesel should use less fuel doing the same job as a gas will but again depending on what model 901 it was it still should have done well

The A/C WD45 doesn't do all that bad but compared to the Farmall BA it sucks the fuel down but then the BA is less then half the HP of the WD45

plus on a riding mower in 10 inch grass you would have to go thru it with the deck up, turn and remow the stripes left from the gap in the blades, lower the deck where you wanted it, then go back and mow the same area, then go back and get the stripes. ect all to make 1 pass over a given area, i got a ih belly mower on my 1949 farmall cub, in that tall a grass, it just ... mows.. it... in one pass , flat and level, and they call a modern riding mower an improvement???

What is a Farmall BA. They made a BN, and a B, and an A but what is a BA, something you put together?

Yes it is a tractor I built form 3 junk tractors. From the transmission forward it is a B and from the transmission back it is an A. I did it that way because the A I had was broken in 2 or 3 pieces from hitting a tree and the B I had had a stuck engine so I built the BA so I could use the sickle bar mower that came with the A

Yep they improved them alright so much so you can buy a good old used Cub or A or Super A with a belly mower for less then it cost you to buy a new rider even from Wal-Mart

A Farmall C will go many more years without major maintenance than the lawn mower will. How many 60-year-old lawn mowers are still in service? Dad's B has had a belly mower hanging from it since 1975 and has seen several thousand hours of use since then. One starter and genny is the only maintenance during that time. Engine got P&S in 1976, and it's beginning to use a little oil now, about two quarts per summer. I raked a little hay with it once but it rode too rough for my liking. Jim

Big wheels ride much smoother than little wheels on rough hay fields. Not a problem though if you have smooth fields. I am now finding myself using tractors that use a little more fuel to rake with (John Deere A and Farmall H both with 38" tires) instead of my fuel miser with littler wheels (Kubota L285 which has 24" tires) simply for the smoother ride. My aching body appreciates the smoother ride.

What don't you like about your Farmall H? It should ride smooth and use very little fuel unless it has a Super kit in it. Still it should use quite a bit less fuel than the Allis WD45 anyway and much more comfortable than the Allis too.

The ones I have do not give as nice a ride as the BA or other such tractor seem to plus use as much or more fuel then the A/C WD45 does. Shoot I would trade an H for a A or B or C or other such tractor in a heart beat

Biggest problem any more is this bum right knee and bad right should which makes getting up on a tractor like the H a pain. I use an Oliver S88 to bale with but it has steps so it is easy to get up on and the A/C WD45 has a step. The BA due to the mower is also easy to get on

Yes both my JD A and my Farmall H are a little difficult to mount dismount. I plan to weld up some steps for both to make it much easier and safer - especially now that I just slipped getting off the JD A after flipping my hay windrows earlier today. Have a real nice buise on my leg where I hit the Power-trol lever - ouch.

I would use my JD-B to rake with but it is hard to start as in you have to turn the flywheel to start it. I do need to pull it out and make it do some work this year but the first time I start it I'll pull start it. This B has been in the family since 1940 and was my grand fathers tractor

That's why I love my Ford 8N! What used to take about 5 gallons and 3+ hours to mow with a GT and 42" deck now uses about 1 1/2 gallon and takes about 95 minutes! Plus with a 3 point i can plow (average 3 acres) , disk, and plant with the ease of a 3 point setup. I also cultivate, dig post holes and plant with the tractor. I use it to rake hay too! Real easy on gas....only tractor that I've run that was as good or better was an R JD!

Rick

I too have an 8N but it is my back hoe tractor and as hard as it is to hook and unhook the back hoe I just leave it on. Plus an 8N unless you have the under belly draw bar does not work real well for a rake tractor due to the 3 point playing the up down game

Only problem with something the size of the A is that it's sooooo slooooooow. Aint' got enough power to rake in 4th, and 3rd is just excruciating to rake with.

HMMMMM I have no problem raking hay with my 8N.....''Rick

If you are using the 3 point draw bar are you using stay bars or what. The rake I have didn't work well on any of the 3 point type draw bars I have used them on they liked to jump up and down way to much

Ya and the good riders if you can call them that at Wal-Mart go for about the same $$ and they last what 2 years if a guy is lucky and mower the perfect yard. Most A and Bs I have picked up over the years I got for well under $1000

Around here an A or B under $1000 would need tires, engine overhaul, sheet metal work, a paint job and other nickel and dime stuff.
You dont buy lawnmowers at walmart.

Oh so you buy them at Lowe's or other such places and still get a Mower made by MTD and are junk. My BA which I built form 3 dead tractor cost me less then a grand and it purrs like a kitten.
