cow with pneumonia

I have a 1st calf heifer (beef) who I brought in from pasture with pneumonia about a week ago. I gave her a shot of banamine and put her on LA-200 and she hasnt got any worse, however she hasn't made any big improvments. With a calf at her side I realize she has a tough road ahead of her to recover while still keeping a calf fed. What I am wondering is would I get better results from plain old penicillin? I need to get her going so she can turn the corner and get back in action. Any input is appreciated.

I get good results with penicillin. But it's like aspirin, you want to use plenty and use it often. Everything I ever used LA200 on died so I threw out what was left of the bottle. Once bit, twice shy. Good luck.

Well, this idea is free, so take it for what it is worth. When my grandparents/parents had dairy cattle, the old veterinarian they used always said to give the cow a few good slugs from a bottle of whiskey each time you treated her with penicillin. The cows always recovered just fine. Don't know if it was the whiskey helping or not?

I'd suggest Baytril or Resflor.

Most cattle suffering from bovine respiratory disease (BRD) have been ill for several days before they are detected. Lungs may already have been damaged.

For me LA 200 isn't working at all this year. I use NUFLOR, but I haven't had to treat anything but calves under 3 months old. I would be talking to a Vet on something as old as what you are dealing with. It sounds to me like you have something other then pneumonia.

Its definitely repiratory. Labored breathing, no appetite, soft long caughs, temp of about 102.5. Stethoscope her in the chute and theres definitely liquid in her lungs.

I bought 2 holstein calfs about 240#.Got the same problem.I used LA 200 and penaciline,no better. Still loosing weight and coughing. Ive heard the wiskey thing before but never tryed it! Maybe 2 shots for the calf and 1 for me,twice a day?? Cant hurt! Doug

I agree. Give her penecillin. The dosage rates between la 200 and penecillin are night and day, penecillin is much stronger.

Can you get your hands on any Micotil? Best I ever saw for resperatory problems. Be careful with it,it's deadly to humans.

Most of the guys are right. Douse her with pennicillan and if you can get some, a "Sustain" bolus or similiar prodcuct for scours. Get her in and keep her quiet with the calf. Then monitor her regulary.
