Garden Planter

I have been reading on this sight for around a year now. I have found very useful information and am in need of some more. Awhile back I saw where someone was building a one row planter using a John Deere row unit somewhere on this sight. I am looking to build one to use in a garden to plant sweet corn. If any one has any ideas or can guide me where to find some ideas I would appreciate it.

Guess the starting point would be the planter unit. Any that use transport wheels to dive the planter are going to be harder to convert. Packer wheel driven units the easiest. Next is a tool bar to fit your tractor or lawn mower. Unless you have a planter as a donor you may be better off buying one already done. Of course there is always the option to make more than one and sell the rest.

I took the hard way and converted an old oliver 540 to a cat 1 3pt two row plate planter. Had to design and build the drive to use the packer wheels (converted it to a 543). Works good and the nice part is I do not need markers as I use the rear tire tracks (setup on my row spacing).

Seems the JD 71(?) units are a easy to make garden planter. Kinze(?) is now making same thing or took over production. The unit has individual drive/packer wheel that turns plate or finger dropper- whatever- and in large tractor use is 4,6,8,12-- units on tool bar. Implement forum had a thread about someone buying older 6,8 row units and cutting them down to one and 2 row rigs for gardens and food plots, putting on 3 pt mounts. Sold for 3/500.00 when a new Cole was going for just over 1000.00. The older 6 and 8 row units were going moderately cheap, new units are foldig wings with a extra fertilizer or herbicide box and much more but the farmers that have upgraded have traded in older 6/8 rows cheap. The early 4 row rigs are still in use for the small plots and sweet corn and some are made into 2 rows by removing outer units so price is still up. Check a implement salvage yard or older dealer and ask to see the old bits and pieces pile. RN

I bought two Allis planter units to make a 3-pt planter to use on our compact utility tractor. We use it for planting corn and beans.Works great. All this to say I have the second one for sale if you aren't too far from NW Mo.Had to buy two to get one.

CH2, Give me a call or text 618 979-1972 John. I make two rows out of the old John Deere 494A planters. I have one on ebay right now. Just go to ebay.com and type in this item number in the search box. #300695760328
