I was wondering what the painted patterns on barns and buildings signify. Are they just decorative or something more? We saw some between Rock Rapids but have seen them in other areas in Iowa.

They are called Barn Quilts, traditional quilt block patterns are enlarged and painted on plywood, attached to the barn for decorative purposes. Others are getting a little more creative with the patterns, like an IH themed one. They are all over Iowa

When we were in NY recently there were a lot of houses and garages that had large 5-pointed stars on them. They didn't look like Christmas stars, and I didn't see any sign of lights. Never more than one, about 3 ft tall, anyone know what these are for?

Here in PA they're called Hex signs. They're a Pennsylvania Dutch good luck symbol, of just decoration.

Are they like the Jewish religion star symbol??
Seems plausable to me, and I'm gullable and not up on religious symbols,like crosses and garlic to ward off vampires,LOL and other blood suckers.IRS.lawyers,politicians etc.LOL

That's what I thought . but even Wikipedia won't
confirm as I put one on my house that it was meant
for either someone is either on active duty within
the household or a Vet lives there.

They represent Quilt patterns, there's some
kind of club, or group that got them started,
it's sorta an Iowa thing, but it's spreading!
