4 wheeler starter

My 25 year old Kawasaki bayou 300 is finally running again with a new carb and a "kreemed" gas tank and was running great. Today I hit the starter and it started to turn over, fired, quit and on a retry all that would happen is the solonoid clicked. So after testing the battery, cleaning the solonoid connections and verifying that I was getting 12v. at the starter I pilled the starter off. So to test this I used the battery charger set on 50A. boost. neg, clip on the frame of the starter and touched the pos. clip to post. Mostly nothing, but every once in a while if I fiddled with it it would spin over but only twice and it wouldn't keep spinning. It spins by hand but quite hard.
So I'm guessing it's whipped, I had it rebuilt years and years ago. Ordered a new one tonight. Did I miss anything?

Probably not. My old Kawasaki Moto4 did about the same thing a couple of years ago. Bushings were shot. Took it to the rebuilder but he didn't have a kit for that particular starter. He got a new one for me.

(quoted from post at 17:47:43 04/14/12) On a Honda the Honda dealer wanted $300 Found one online shipping and all $60

ebay and china ain't always bad..... 350+ bucks for the carb on my yamaha... 39 including shipping for a new universal carb for that application.....

I sure would have opened it up & checked it out. Very simple. A few dollars for a set of brushes & bushings & they are good again.

As a suggestion you might want to stay away from gasoline with ethanol. Seems hard on small engine carburators.

I know this is against the current of most people on this site but I got tired of carb problems and my dealer told me to use 100% gasoline.

That is what the chrome rod on the right side is
for, but don t forget the compression release on
the head.LOL

Thanks for all the responses. The price online was $54.00. I'll give it a try and can still get the original rebuilt.I agree with the talk about the gas, I add ethanol treatment and hope for the best. I wish I could do as my welfare neighbors do in all their four wheelers and use racing fuel!!! But in a way I guess I'm buying it already! Thanks again Chris
