Learned a hard lesson

Last week we cleaned out the old barn, alot of dust and old hay. I didn't wear my respirator mask the whole time. Fast forward a week, my Grandma passed away Saturday morning after a long battle with demenita and I was feeling ill, thought it was just nerves. Monday after the funeral I thought I would get to feeling better, went into the shed to work on the planter and got to feeling hot and dizzy, stood up and fell over into the header behind me. Then the wife took me to the ER where after 6 hours they found out I had bacterial pneumonia and inflamation of the lymph nodes around my intestines. Number 1 I learned that those masks are to be worn, and number 2 not to ignore illness. I was very sick, just now able to sit up without being dizzy.

One cant be too careful when working in old and dusty areas. Some years ago I was helping my MILs husband haul baled hay, It was quite dusty in the loft and I was wearing a mask. Some of the others scoffed about it. I just told them, that the next day they would still be blowing dust from their sinuses and I would be breathing easy.

my reply to your post last week was this, "Here's what I found: wear a dust mask as the mice and rat crap is bad to breathe in." Yes, dust is very bad because there's bad things in it. Sorry you found out the hard way, but hopefully others will take heed.

Glad you are feeling better now. Had that same problem years ago when cleaning off a haylage silo. Really bad flu like symtoms for 3 or 4 days. Be especially careful from now on because now you will probably be alot more sensitive to similar dust and molds. I know I am.....Ron

Ya..Years ago we just didn't bother to ware a mask,,,Got kinda sick a couple times but got over it ok...I thot...Dont take much dust to make me sick any more...Just get around a little moldy hay and can feel it all night long,,,,They say you get a build up...The masks we get today are a LOT better that we could ever get back then....I guess we just learn as we live.. :? :? :?

Agree with 4020 guy. Now that I am older, I think I have less tolerance.

I posted on your other post. When I cleaned mine barn out, didn"t get real sick like you. But hacked and coughed for 6-8 weeks. Now its seems like less and less dust/mold irritates my lungs.

That sounds serious, gald you are improving. I am getting better about wearing a dust mask when discing and mowing, but can improve. Your post will make me and others I hope, protect their bodies. Stan

REST A LOT! Drink lots of fluids. You are going to feel pretty weak and probably continue to cough for at least another 6 weeks. It is not fun.

2 months ago I helped a neighbor convert a chicken coop into a hay barn so he could to store round bales of hay. I got histoplasmosis and react to the meds to get rid of it. I should have worn a resperator.
