In the news today some people are finding out their Freon in airconditioning systems was stolen by kids to get stoned...Some kids think it will get them high, but an airconditioning man was on the news and said it will just kill you if inhaled...they said Freon prices have risen now to $75 per pound.

You certainly got a Great deal on 30 lbs..!!

It will probably be $20.oo/Lb this Summer at the small parts stores..

Ron..

Freon is like Helium - it displaces oxygen. The "high" is from lack of oxygen. All they need to do is hold their breath and get the same effect.

A couple years ago a "repair" man was playing with freon with his child in a bath tub. He was using a small hose and blowing bubbles in the child's water (expensive bubbles). He then left for a while and came back - the child was dead. The freon filled the tub (heavier than air) and the child died from lack of oxygen.

Inhaling Freon is not a good plan. First you become hypoxic (i.e. low on oxygen). More, and you risk Cardiac Arrhythmias, and Respiratory Obstruction and Collapse. This can lead to death, or permanent damage. Unfortunately, your body keys on CO2 and not on O2 to cause heavier breathing, and since the freon would displace O2, ypur body will not respond to lack of oxygen, and death is a very good possibility.

Where did they buy it? Freon hasn't been on the market around here in 25 years, I'd love a can or 3 for a camper fridge and other oldtimers that went dead. I'd love to figure out how to refill ammonia too.

That sounds like a murder rather than accident.

I got a 30 lb jug from Sam's Club last Wednesday for $127.38. There is a note on the cash register receipt stating the refunds on R-134A are not allowed after 7 days of purchase. Maybe covering themselves from price fluctuations?

Freon is a trade name beloning to DuPont. The word is used in general for all brands AND types. R-12 (auto) was replaced years ago, now R-22 (Home) is/has been phased out. Those are just 2 #'s. There are many differant "Freon's", plus blends, all numbered by class. There is CFC, HFC, HCFC, zerotropic, nearazeotropic, azeotropic, +++, all used to define "Freon". Ammonia is considered a refrigerant, with it's own number, as Propane. As far as learning how to fill Ammonia, well?? If you know refrigeration and how it works and the dangers, ok. Ammonia is as bad if not worse than some others. Ever get awhiff while cleaning somthing? Can't breathe, kind of vapor locks is a fair description. The simplest example of refrigeration most are familiar with is your shop air compressor. Compress it gets hot, expand (out the tool), it cools, not real efficient though.

About 3 years ago a fellow owed me some money and gave me 20) 30lbs. (600 lbs.) cans of R-22 for the bill its all factory sealed and still in the box stacked in my shop covered up guess I should sell it one of these days since I hear its getting pricey, Forane is the brand.

I was going to sell three cans of R-12 last week, but when I checked on shipping, USPS wouldn't ship it, FedEx wanted a hazardous material account set up first....not worth the trouble.

Brother-in-law is in the HVAC business. A store had a walk-in that was low on freon. He filled it. A few days later same problem. This went on a few times, each time low on freon. Store owner was getting mad. Brother-in-law added red die to the freon. Next day Owner's son had red die all over his face. Owner was no longer mad at Brother-in-law for not being able to find the leak.

They sell locks to put over the fill valves so kids can't get to the freon. BTW, sniffing freon has been going on for decades.
