Issues with atv?

I traded a truck for an 04 bombardier outlander 400 HO, ran fine when we made the deal, ran fine yesterday checking cows and farting around. Today I put fresh gas in, checked the oil and put my sprayer on it, little electric femco and sprayed thistles for about an hour. Then all the sudden it died no noises just quit. Wouldn't start with the switch but did start with the pull rope so I headed towards the truck and it quit agian and wouldn't start. Walked to the truck and came back to load it and it started with the rope. Any ideas as to how I managed to screw it up?

Is it cranking??? with the starter (switch ) tho??
If so, I just went thru a similar problem with mine.... Do the easy stuff first like replace the sparkplug and make sure you are getting plenty of air, fuel, and spark... (especially as soon as it quits)..

Mine all pointed to a weak spark and possible big bucks.... Turned out being the carburetor.... fine now.

Good Luck.

No cranking with the switch, I can hear the solenoid click on occassion. I'm thinking that it may be an electircal issue since I was running the sprayer when it happened.

Have you got a known good battery you can try (and work it again) with? With and without the sprayer. Maybe it has a circuit breaker and the sprayer is too much??

Good Luck.

Thanks for the link hobo, those are my thoughts too Dave, it was getting dark last night but I have the battery on the charger and will try it this afternoon without the sprayer. It is a new battery, but a cheapo ever start. This morning I hit the switch and it tried to kick over so I'm thinking the sprayer was too much load for it.

If so, maybe you can make you an auxiliary battery setup to strap on?

Running stall caused by the sprayer drawing more
power than the alternator could produce.
Stator or rectifier/regulator maybe partly or completely failed.

90% sure you ran the battery dead with the sprayer,
charge it up and it will be fine. When I do spraying
with my 400 Honda I stay in lower gears so as to run
the engine faster to keep the battery charged, never
had a problem. Put a volt meter on it when its
running and check it out, should go to 13.8 or so at
fast idle.

An electrical issue on an Outlander? I really can't believe that to be true.... LOL
I should keep a catologue of all the problems we've had with ours....
It may be that the sprayer is drawing more than the system can supply in your case... but we also have a problem with the starter on this one that I think is related to a relay or mabey a sticking brush... hence it won't crank sometimes until you give the starter a sharp crack...
Check the connections too... Otherwise it's the Can-Am program you're going to be dealing with.

It does sound like you drained the ATV's battery. A motorcycle behaves the same way with a nearly dead battery. Those small alternators will maintain a charged battery but they won't re-charge a drained battery. How many amps does your sprayer draw compared to your alternators output less the draw for lights and ignition?

You may want to get a car battery or better yet a deep cycle battery to power the sprayer. A 70 to 105 Amp-Hour deep cycle battery can run a 30 amp trolling motor for several hours on one charge without hurting the battery.

Charged the battery and had no problems afterwards, have several spare bats from trucks and tractors around will use one of them to power the sprayer from now on.

Everyone nailed it. And yes as B&D said you can smoke your alternator. I proved it!!! On a garden tractor. Now I have a big RV battery on the sprayer.
