Hp question?

I forgot to say, my friends old tractor is 12 hp and 48 inch deck, I have a 69 JD 112 with 10 hp 48 inch deck, why is everything 25/ 28 hp ect but dosent seem to have the power of the old engines? And what was that HP lawsuit about? Something about false HP, now everything is sold by cc's. Instead of 5 hp it's now a 203cc engine.

Hi Jay!

I think it is due to the very large increase in blade speeds that has occured in the last 10 years or so. My zero turn is 60" cut, 25hp. At full speed it will cut "normal grass at normal height" at 11mph. I thought this silly when I bought it, but it gets it done very quickly, no skipping etc.I have a 1 acre section of my lawn that is flat and smooth, it mows it very quickly.

Most of the new machines of quality not just zero turns, have much higher ground speeds when cutting in comparison to the older machines.

The older engines produced more torque at a lower RPM. I think the lawsuit was because the HP rating on the engines was not within the useable RPM range.

I agree, I have 2 exmark lazer z's one has a 27 hp kohler and a blade tip speed of 15500 fpm, I don't mow as fast as it will go, kinda a bouncy ride! Lol

Higher horsepower because we are mowing faster, that and people pay for horsepower, the manufacturer can take a cheap mower like an MTD, put a larger engine on it, it costs them $100 more but they get $200 more when they sell it because it's higher horsepower. Folks like to brag how big their tractors are, whether it's a new cub cadet or a 4020 John Deere, I hate to think how many dealers turned up the fuel on a 4020 and dyno'd it to make the customer think their tractor was stronger than the normal 4020. I think you'll also find that the newer machines don't have the duty cycle that the old ones did. If you take an old John Deere, Cub Cadet or Case and worked it wide open they'd run all day and for a good long time. I don't think you can do that with the newer machines, they'll overheat or break. I'm not real familiar with the horsepower lawsuit, from what I hear someone bought something that said "X horsepower" on the front they tested it and found out it wasn't so so now all the manufacturers obfuscate the power of their engines or equipment under the theory they can't be sued for a claim they didn't make.

I jump that safety for just that reason. Plus I don't wanna restart the mower everytime I have to get off to pick up a stick. Motor and blades stay running. Also jumped the parking brake safety do mower will start if break is off.

Mrs Lloyd sometimes runs mine, I'm afraid she will hurt herself, left all my saftey's in tact.

I guess that comes from the time she meant to go right, and went instead left and mowed the flower garden!! LOL

lloyd, i was going to disable the safteys on my newer mowers, until i rolled my deere L-110 riding mower cutting road ditches. turf tires slipped on the bank and over she went. i run atv knobbys on that tractor now.

Rather than getting off the seat to pick up a stick or trash, some have a "grabber" on their mower to extend their reach. Another difference between old mowers' h.p. requirements and new is the hydrostat takes more power than a gear transmission.

I don't know where you live, but where I live most people have one or two acres. Some have more, like me, I have three now and had about ten a few years ago untill I sold off some.

(quoted from post at 03:40:43 03/29/12) So why would you want or need an acre of lawn?????

Yeah, I'm one of those that have a couple of acres to mow. I just like having a mini golf course to look at.

Zero turn in the future right after the barn is done.
