Need to set some shade trees out, to park my tractors under, and someone suggested a Maple variety called Autum Blaze. Has any one had any experience with them or would another variety be better. I am in the southern Minnesota northern Iowa zone. Thanks

Herald,
Could tell you more than you would probably ever want to know about Autumn Blaze Maples. I sell the most of this tree followed by Blue Spruce.

They are a hybrid of a red and a silver maple. They turn the most fire red in the fall of any maple I have seen. The growth rate is rapid to say the least. They are good to zone 3. Not a whole lot bad to say about these trees.

They are not the cheapest due to their popularity, but I don't think you'll be disappointed.

They are a lot stronger than a regular silver maple. But remember, these trees have not been around very long, they were patented maybe 10 years ago. So you don't have any large ones around yet with 36 inch trunks. I still pay a $1 patent fee per tree when I order them wholesale.

We have five on our block in St. Cloud. City contract planted in the boulevard They are strong growers and have substantial growth. They can handle pretty strong watering. The city has made curb cut depressions to funnel road runoff into the roots with no issues. Very nice fall colors. Jim

Don't know anything about the trees, but if your parking your tractors under them then you better go on and get some covers for the tractors at the same time. Just remember trees means birds, and birds mean big 'white spots' on your tractors nice paint job..........

How long do you expect it to take for a tree to grow high enough to provide cover for a tractor, got a lazy 20years ,also not the best places when there are thunderstorms. Better off to build a skillion roof.

I hope you were joking, or just useing a figure of speech, when you said --to park your tractor under. I bought a (new to me) F350 diesel flatbed, in Feb. I brought it home and intended to leave it parked in the only open parking spot left here, which was under a large honey locust. We had a heavy wet snow, and then it started misting rain, and freezing. I wanted to make some sides and endgates, for the ford, so I moved a tractor out of my shed and put the truck in, where I could work out of the weather. The next morning the honry locust had split down the middle, and was laying in the drive, where the truck had been sitting. Dodged that bullet! A lot of folks here are planting a hybred popular, for a quick growth tree. That might get you a shade tree before you get too old!

I am in Eastern Iowa have the blaze maples, and they do fine. I also have some ash that I hope will survive. It seems like the maples have the least disease.
