computer problem

Something's going on with my computer. Lately,if I check the history, there's a whole bunch of sites listed that I haven't been on. Oddest thing is,I can check an hour or two later and they're all gone without my having deleted them. Try again in a few more hours and there will be even more than there were before they went away.
I've tried opening them. Most are just narrow pop up type banners,a series of letters,or take me to google to search for whatever it's supposed to be. There was one that was a site for video games, that was the only one that was a complete website. When I got on just now,EVERYTHING in the history was gone, even the sites that I HAVE been on today, except this one of course,I use this for my homepage.
Will popups show up on the history? They never have before.
One other thing, from time to time when I'm not using it,the computer will restart itself. Then now and again, and I assume it's after an automatic restart, there will be a box that says something about a system error or something and ask if I want them to send an error report.

Virus or something?

Do you have high-speed internet access or dial-up? Sounds like someone has installed a remote control program on your computer and is using it to go to internet sites. This is very dangerous. They can use your computer to download illegal materials and leave you holding the bag. If this is so, unplug it from the internet and get it cleaned ASAP!

Isn't exactly high speed, but it's wireless. Strange thing is,it's not showing up on the history on the wifes laptop and she's using the same router and everything that I am.

My son, the computer geek, says he thinks you may have picked up a virus. If you have a virus scan available...

Malware and robot software can and does infect computers to allow others to use them remotely. I would use a substantial modest cost malware protection program, and a virus program as well. I use industrial strength Protection from My school (they do not want professors bringing problems into the school, so we are required to install and run a suite of protection. Jim

Second the Malwarebytes, and add Spybot Search & Destroy- what one doesn't get the other will. MB is impressive in that their files of recognized bad bugs is up dated every day- just always update them before running, and they'll catch most of the critters. Best part, both have a free version that works just fine

I started running a Microsoft system on it last night, but I made the mistake of running it online instead of installing it. It kicked out on me before it was done running,so this morning I'm going to intsall it and run it. So I'll be off for half a day or so. Looks like one that takes quite a while.

OK,just got done running that Malwarebytes scan. Found over 300 infected files. Supposed to be fixed now,we'll find out.
Thanks guys.
