Tagging camper (no title)

A friend has a camper that he got for free but it came without a title. Been so long since it has had a tag on it and changed hands so many times he can't track it back that far.
I thought he might be able to get a tag for a homemade trailer but don't know what or how much he would have to do to it to consider it homemade. Anybody tried doing this or have any ideas?

Take it to a notary, they can probably do the paperwork. He might need a bill of sale from the person he got it from.

I've been through something like that twice with old boats, the state doesn't seem to worry too much if the value is low and you can find a serial number.

In ohio all you have to do is weigh it and call it homemade to get a title.Trailers under 3000 pounds don't need a title.

Getting Maine registration is usually the easier and it's all done by mail. Once it has legal Maine plates, it's legal to use anywhere. Past couple of years, just about every trailer I see in my part of the northeast has Maine plates.

Some states it's easy and some states it's near impossible.

I don't know what state you're in, so can comment on your laws.

Easy fix it to just register in the State of Maine. No title needed - just a written bill of sale if 1994 or older. If newer you might have to bring it to a scale and get an offical weight slip.

If you take note. The company does not register campers or live in trailers. Also my state, MA, is going after people with trailers registered out of state. I believe that Montana is very abundant about registering out of state campers and motor homes.

Last I knew Maine would not register an out of state camping trailer .Other trailers still OK.

Again we don t know where you are, here(MO) you would need to have a Hwy patrol inspect it and run the VIN, then you might get a title.

The only answer that matters is the one you get from your state's department of motor vehicles.

You'll have to call them to get the real deal

I researched Maine plates for new york state residents a few years ago,If I remember right you had to stretch the truth for it to work.I didnt take the risk. Bill

I have a co-worker who went through the process to get a title (in MN) on a 30-year-old car that never had one. It had been been a race car since new, but he wanted to be able to drive it on the street.

Filled out all the paperwork verifying that he owned it. Then had to get a bond against the value of the car in case someone showed up claiming it was stolen. After a holding period (couple years) the money was returned.

See if you can't go in and apply for a lost title. It's done through the sheriff's office. Once that is in hand if the last titled owner is not to be found a bond can be obtained for a couple of years and a temp title obtained.

State of Florida Department of Motor Vehicles has a form you fill out to register with no title. No much different then New York. You must give the weight of the trailer. If it has NO serial or VIN number - they might assign you one. If it DOES have a # - depending on weight they might require a police officer to look it, verify the #, and write you a slip to hand in.

A friend of mine lives in Punta Gorda and has registered many trailers that way. Most he buys have not titles since many in Florida never had them to start with.

New York works the same way - but if a trailer is over a certain weight - you must prove the weight with an official weight slip. I get mine down the scales at the local scrap yard.

here in ok you have to get it inpected, basically to see if its road worthy.if it passes that the state will issue a homemade title.Talk to your tag agent, you can also file a storage lein, fastest way would be simply go to the tag agent and say it was left to you by a recently deceased relative. That here is simply done by signing you name on a form that states theres no other interested parties who may hold a claim ,and they issue a new tag in your name.of course if you came in every week and did that someone may question you about it.

There are many ways to accomplish it- but only one will work in your state. And your Dept. of Licensing or DMV or whatever they call it will tell you what it is.

In IL., you have to PROVE, where all the material came from. I sneeked 1 in 2weeks before the law went into effect. Too many stolen trailers titled as home made.
