like to listen

When my son and I go shoping,I some times stay in the G.M.C.(99 mG.M.C Yukon) and listen to the radio (AM) but wen we leave the store the noise is so distracting (engine )it ismost impossible to hear the program. I do know they use to make engine noise supressors a person could install that would remove the static engine noise and clear the radio signal up to par. I'll bet some are used on tractors. Some of the supressors would also boost te signal. Does anyone here know of such an animal and uses it? regards,LOU.

Lou, I'm thinking you don't have radio problems as much as ignition and/or alternator problems. 13 years old I might put on new ignition wires, resistor plugs, maybe cap/rotor.

Lou,

I agree with gtski. I'd think that you probably need new spark plug wires and/or resistor plugs.

Many, many years ago I was stationed at a Navy base that required an electrical emissions test to permit a vehicle on the base. I was running pure copper ignition wires and failed the test miserably. I replaced the wires with carbon (resistive) wires and passed first time.

If you haven't replaced the wires in a long time, I think that it might really help.

Also, as mentioned, there's usually a capacitor on the output of the alternator. If that's bad, you might also be getting noise in your 12 volt wiring.

Good luck,

If it has a real fender antenna, check and see if it is rusty where the antenna goes thru the fender. It needs to have a good ground there. and make sure the antenna is plugged into the radio all the way so the coaxial cable makes good contact on each end.

Thanks to all. I'll bet these wires are original. Gonna do a change and see what else is needed if wires don' correct the problem. Regards LOU.

open the hood.
look around and see if there is a braided ground wire running from the hood to the body.
If not add one, the hood will help shield the engine noise from the antenna.
