Another ??? on the ATV....

One more time folks... The part I was trying to figure out is the stator... Anyway... need a little troubleshooting help. I don't have a shop manual and the owners manual doesn't help much. This a 250 cc yamaha ATV but I believe the problem is generic and I believe someone talked about it with a tractor before.....

Anyway,
it won't start with the electric start, cranks good but won't fire. A quick pull on the rope and it kicks right off.... Idles fine and revs decent. After it is warm it will sometimes start with the starter but usually not. Always starts right up with the rope.
This just started after I ran it without oil and almost siezed the motor..... Things got pretty warm down there......

The way it's acting is there just isn't enough power to fire the plug when the starter is turning. Also, when you ride it, it goes along just fine to about half throttle then looses power after..... Carb is fine, has been cleaned and adjusted..... Even put a carb off the same one that was/is running fine with the same results.......

Any idea where I should look? As far as I can see, there only 4 parts to the ignition. The CDI box, the stator, the coil, and the sparkplug. The part exposed to the heat was the stator, but could it be causing the problem I'm having?

Thanks for any tips.

Dave

I want to say the same thing, you have no compression or a cracked block from running it without oil. "No oil" is a guarantee something is damaged !!

(quoted from post at 18:11:58 03/11/12) And what do you do for the US government?

what's that got to do with my situation and/or question???
If it's a jab about the oil, it's well deserved. I got lax... Had the thing for almost 3 years and never had to add but a few ounces of oil between changes. Got to checking once a week as opposed to before starting, led to once a month and I was pretty good still, just something happened in between and the oil was gone. I used it a lot harder during that time but the oil check just blew over my head. Lesson learned.......

Sorry, forgot to mention, piston, rings, cylinder, head, and gasket are all new......... Will check the compression again tho...

Hey Dave, I know you probably have, but just by chance, have you checked the kill switch. It's incorperated in the system too. I know my Honda won't crank if it's engaged, but your's might be different or possibly shorted out. Don't know, just thinking, Keith

Issue seems to be a weak spark when the starter is running because it starts with the rope fine. Idles perfect and you can ride it up to about half throttle. Acts like just a weak spark across the board but the nostart is just with a cold motor and starter cranking. Found a shop manual but is doesn't troubleshoot weak, only no spark/start. Compression is 12 bar (175psi). Neighbor kid has it in his shop now and I hope to see it fixed soon.

O WELL...Dont sweat it as it happens to the best of fameleys....
