OT Trailer Tires

I bought a new 14K tilt trailer. I did a lot of research and finally wound up with a Big Tex trailer. Not real thrilled with it. The paint is soft, they apparently didn't use any hardner in it. About half as many screws in the bed as there should be. The tires are the biggest disapointment. Steel belted radials supposedly. The only brand on them is PROVIDER. They have 2 ply rayon sidewall (only) 2 ply rayon tread, 1 nylon & 2 steel. Anyone have these tires No designaton but I am sure they are made in China.
When did our laws alow no designation of country where manufactured.

Iam looking at new 14K deckovers. All the ones that I have looked at so far have been powder coated and come with 10 to 14 ply tires.

Pat,
I am confused after reading your post. You state that you did a lot of research. Did you look at the Big Tex Trailer in person, then go to the competitors lot and review their trailers? I would think that looking in person would have caught the lack of deck screws and the tire quality and gave you a comparison of what else is on the market.

GordenSD I will take a look at them. So far I have looked at Nomanco,Johnson trailers,Kaufman,Hudson Bros.,Sure-Trac,Beaver Creek,Liberty and JRC Custom Trailers. Iam leaning towards Beaver Creek, Johnson trailers and Liberty. They come with a 8 or 10" Ibeam stringers and cross members at 16" center standard.

I confused too, as you said you did allot of research before buying. I would not have took it even if I had to order sight unseen for the reasons you mentioned. Probably too late now. I would still make sure them tires are rated for the loads the trailer is rated for. I had a problem with my fifth wheel camper. Come to find out the tires the manufacture put on it were rated for less weight than the camper actually weighed.

I won"t deal with Big Tex.

In 2005 when I was looking for a new horse trailer, they quoted me $40,000 for a 4 horse, stripped down, rolling "beer can", no amenities. The dressing room didn"t even have carpet.

My 3 horse Elite was $16,000. Elite with living quarters was $23,000.

Guess they thought I was stupid.

Don't know where you're located, but Performance Trailers, Parker Trailer Sales, in Mt. Pleasant, Texas are excellent. Google Performance Trailers for their website.

They have or will build anything you want.

Had the trailer built because I wanted a yellow one. I didn't do a scratch test on the paint on one on the lot. I checked the load rating on the tires and they were correct as are the ones on my trailer. I didn't check the cord makeup, which was printed in very small letters.
Live and learn.

Don't get hung up on the "PLY" construction of the tires. Modern tires only have 2 actual plies of rubber, though they have an "8 ply" or "10 ply" rating.

As long as it carries the proper load rating, the only thing you need to worry about is if the quality is any good.

I bought a 10k bumper pull made by hurst think there out of Tennessee wasn"t very keen on it when I bought it but after using it awhile I love it built rugged but lightweight

Understand. Did they not quote name brand tires with the trailer with a certain load rating? I know the places around here do offer used or new tires.

I ended up buying used because I was not that impressed with any of the new stuff around here. The ones that were nice were $7k, which is a little much for my occasional use.

For what its worth, I see a lot of Big Tex trailers on the road.

Tell them you expect warranty if the paint starts coming off right away and if they have to repaint, you want it sandblasted and repainted using primer underneath. How it's painted, deck material, how it's secured and what tires you wanted could have been specified when you ordered it. Instead of doing all the research, you should have just asked on here first instead of after the fact. The cheaper they can build it, the less time it takes and the more money they make. Tires have to meet DOT specs.
