Trying to help out a friend whose F150"s running rough. Pulled up a P0012 trouble code for "Bank 1 Cam Position Timing over retarded". Can"t find much on the OBD code sites without having to pay and I"m too much of a tightwad!! One answer was a bad timing solenoid for the cam and another was worn out "phasers"! Anybody here have or known about this particular trouble? Thanks guys!!

From the technical update training I went to this past summer, They said the most common cause of the symptoms you describe was insufficient oil change intervals and the resultant plugging of the oil screen at the cam phaser which prevents normal oil flow to and from the cam phaser. If the phaser can"t return to the normal position at idle, the engine runs rough. Hope this helps. Gerard

alsotiming chain tensioners tend to blow seal ring and leak oil pressure, if you let it go very long cam gets scored and loses more pressure and then crank gets damaged. If it is only one bank, you may be lucky and have a solenoid issue. Don't use cheap filters or go LONG time between oil changes with 3 valve engines, they are females if you know what I mean.

Thanks for your input, guys!! Talked to a friend of mine yesterday who runs a repair shop and works on just about anything. He mirrored the oill change intervals, etc. and recomended trying a "motorflush" first before going in and doing any parts replacement, etc. Apparently these engines can"t stand much sludge/crud like others do! Makes me think about oil changes on my "05 Chevy Colorado which has an engine (3.5 liter) with the variable cam timing. Thanks again and I"ll let you know what we do.
