Hello. I have a 48 cub that I"ve finally begun to reassemble after a long restoration (found a post here from 2005). It starts and runs fine, but after a minute I start to see smoke coming from the light switch. It appears to be coming from the field resistor. When I shut it off, nothing seems hot but the resistor seems to be deteriorating. I"m also getting intermitant failure of the kill switch, which is very frustrating when there"s smoke and no easy path to the carb to suffocate it. Took the generator apart to make sure I didn"t connect anything wrong, checked and rechecked wiring diagrams etc. I"m a little concerned that I may have bad grounds because of new paint. So, if the switch is not grounding because of paint, can I directly ground the generator F terminal? Any of this sound familiar? Also, I seem to remember a ground wire attaching to the governor cover, but I have no such wire in my new wiring harness. Last question. Is the kill switch just grounding the magneto (can I just ground the thing manually for now?)? I"m an idiot when it comes to wiring, so don"t be annoyed with dumb questions. My specialty is making them look pretty, and that it does.
