diesel motor surging??

Couple weeks ago, I posted about my tractor surging slightly while running at full throttle (pedal throttle 1900 rpm) on the road...
Was very slight to the point that it was almost not noticeable.. Hand throttle lever will run it at 2000 -2100 rpm...

Today, I was zooming alone at 1900 rpm's and it just kicked up to 2000+ like when you would hold open a governor for a second and went back to the 1900... Did that a couple times...
Any idea what could cause it, or if it's something warning me of a problem?? Or is it just a normal occurance??

IHC 3 cyl diesel, 42 HP.... German model but the motor may be in the States also (D155)...

Thanks, Dave

I'd guess something loose in the linkage from the pedal to the pump if it runs smooth and a couple hundred rpm faster with the hand throttle.

well with out hearing it i am going to do some guessing here , First thing that comes to mind here is (1) she is sucking air someplace and they can do this with out showing anyleaking , (2) depending on how long it is running before this starts it could be that the cap is not venting enough (3) the pump is thinking real hard about going south.

If tractor has Bosch rotory VA model pump make sure fuel delivery is good to pump inlet, filters, etc. This pump is hydraulicaly governed, not mechanical like others are, any restrictions will cause erratic running.

If it has spin on fuel filters it may suck a little air and you not
see a leak. Just a place to start without costing you $$$.

It does... I'll change filters and leave the cap a little loose. Only did it once or twice.....

Thanks...

Could be sucking air from a pinhole leak somewhere.

I had a full sized Chevy Blazer with a 6.2 diesel that would surge for the first minute or so after a cold start. Went nuts trying to figure it out. Couldn't find a leak anywhere.

I finally modified a fuel tank cap so I could chuck an air hose on it. I put a regulator/guage in the air hose with the regulator initially backed all the way off. I then started easing pressure into the system. When I hit no more than about 6 pounds of pressure, a pin sized stream of diesel fuel shot across the engine from a fitting on the filter on the firewall.

Fixed the fitting and no more surge.

last time the filter serviced?

any water trap?

any injector cleaner ran thru it? i'd check/change filter and traps, then double does it a couple tnaks before panicking too much..

????? Both filters have water valves... Tank is about empty. I'll change filters. What about injector cleaner (15 gallon tank)? Brand??

Tractor starts and runs fine (to my uneducated standards)... Just "kicked up" a couple times....

I'd check the filters first, too. I use power service diesel additive, in the white plastic bottle, they make Diesel 911, the rapid acting additive, to stop gelling in cold weather. Generally the white bottle, is right next to the 911 bottle, in store displays.

That's a fairly common occourance when they draw an air bubble through. Spin on filters can leak at the seal where they seat... and the CAV filters will often leak on one of their various flat o-rings if they've not been changd with the filter or not installed correctly...
