'99 Powerstroke injectors

Ford misses on a cylinder or two on startup- soon smooths out, but would like the injectors to work right. I know they are not conventional- something to do with oil pressure, and I don't pretend to understand them.

My question- will injector cleaner put in the fuel help? Or just wasting my money?

Cleaner is unlikely to help. You need what we call the "Kill Box" to find injectors acting up. Before you do swap any out, make sure you have all the glow plugs working. Not unusual to have the injector/glow plug connectors on the valve cover gaskets melt. If you do replace any injectors, don't forget to suck out the oil and fuel that runs down the hole to the cylinder.

Problem is the air gap between the magnet and the plate it attracts.
that is all in engine oil. as it warms up and oil gets thinner it will allow the plate to work. I do not think additive would help, but if plunger is hanging up on the fuel side possibly? Can't hurt to try.

I recently changed the fuel filter on my powerstroke and filled the filter bowl with Powerservice Diesel Kleen instead of diesel. Started it and let it run for 30sec to 1min and shut it off. Then let it sit for a few hours. I think it helped a little, but I am still going to put new injectors in this summer. Mine has 210k on the stock ones.

The injectors are are electronically controlled and hydraulically actuated with engine lube oil from the high pressure pump. The muscle comes from the high pressure oil and the timing and duration comes from the PCM.

Maybe you injectors aren"t bad; maybe you glow plugs in a couple of jugs are not working.

Before you change the injectors, check the wires under the valve covers. They are a problem with a high milage 7.3

BG oil makes an additive exclusively for these motors to help w/ the oil side of the injectors.. They get gummed up over time. You put this additive in let it idle for a few hours, yes I said a few, drain the oil, refill w/ fresh, it will run much better.. I have done it on over 100 of these engines has helped everyone of them.

I thought International/Navistar built em. Maybe that was the 6.9 and non-power stroke 7.3. Clear it up for me?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will get a manual and check out the glow plugs, and will look into the BG magic elixer.

No white smoke at startup- its blue, until it smooths out.

I know the 7.3 was a good engine, but when they came up with the oil pressure actuated injectors and stuck them under the valve covers they became a PITA to work on and very expensive.
