I need to remove the final drive from my JD 401 industral tractor. This 401 is the same as several ag tractors 2020, 2030 1020 and a couple others. My manual says nothing about removing the oil from the rear end. Is it necessary to remove the oil, before removing the final drive? Thanks for any info. Stan

Yes you will have to remove the hydraulic oil. The final drives and brakes all run in the oil. So when you loosen the bolts you will get oil if not drained. Get the gasket that goes between the housing and the transmission. Don't use silicone on it. The excess will foul up the hydraulics.
