Sentimentality and tractors.

Had a good farm friend pass away over the summer and had quite a few IH tractors. The family is selling some the larger ones and I have a chance to buy one. Never been too big into IH tractors, but having one of my friends tractors would be great. I've been saving for an Oliver I've been searching for for a while and was wondering if I should stick to my guns and find the Oliver I've been wanting or buy one of IH's for sentimentality value? Any experience with situations like this out there? THX

1963 I am and IH guy but saying that if this was a good friend and can pull it off to buy one do it you are and will always be and Oliver guy but what a tribut to him.

Well this not the 'exact' answer you are looking for but kinda close.

In 1995 I bought my farm(small..175 acres). I then bought a 1957 Ford 850. I plowed with herall night sometimes until the exhaust was glowing red-hot, disced, cultivated, planted, sprayed, picked corn with a single row New Idea, etc.

I used her for everything. Then I let someone borrow her and the destroyed her. When I got her back I promised her I would get her fixed up to the way she was.

After about five years of her sitting out in the bottom, I had the extra money to rebuild her and get her running. Now she is in a covered shed and is awaiting the complete rebuild she deserves(show room quality)

I can't wait and I know she earned it.

I think the answer would be -If it will it do the work you are looking for. Sentimentality is wonderful but it don't pay the bills.
If you can afford to buy it - go for it.

How old and how large are these IH tractors? CaseIH is still good about parts for older high production run tractors. AGCO would like to forget all about Oliver, White and Allis. Just my two cents, from a useable working tractor point of view. Bruce

Get the Farmall now. You can pick up an Oliver latter. As time goes on you will never be sorry about getting your friends trctor.
I waited about 45 yrs. to get a good friends tractor. Now I am glad that I waited.
You cannot put a price on long ago memories and good times with your neighbor. clint

Thanks for posting that part about lending a tractor. I hear this story over and over. I think the reason we lend stuff is because we think the borrower will take as good as care of it as we do. That's just not the case. I learned the hard way too. I lent our D8H to a fellow contractor across the street because he was in a jam, had a bunch of trucks hauling in and couldn't get rid of the dirt fast enough. Now the engine is smoked. He's not going to do anything about it. If you really want to help someone, go do the job yourself. Why subject yourself to a crap shoot?

I'd buy how ever many of the IH tractors you could. I'm a deere guy but like a few IH and Oliver tractors as well. Buy your friends tractor(s). If you don't you will wish you had down the road.

Both here and in the magazines it is very common to see people looking for a specific old tractor, and I'm sure that it holds true for other old things although what else is there that lasts like old tractors do? So I would say "Don't sell sentimental value short".
