I am kinda disappointed that we are being forced to sell some of our farmland for state hyway expansion. However I realize the other solution would be to drive less and I don't want to do that either. That being said, we have the technology to send an unmanned grain cart out to meet combine and follow along combine till full and return to truck. Also I have seen the video of the unmanned planter going around the ends and planting the field. Do you think we could equip vehicles with gps and program it to take you to your destination and every vehicle on the road would be equally equipped? We could then have them go down the hyway very close to one another and move many times more people and product around with less roads. No accidents, no start and stop traffic. Every thing in unicen flowing perfectly. Would this concept work? How far in the future before we would have the necessary technology in place or do we already have it? I am not at all versed in gps technology and I struggle with the basics on computer use so much so that I am pressing my limits to just post messages on this forum.

It certainly sounds like a good idea, I heard a proponent of something similar on the radio a while back. My only concern is what may happen if there is a computer glitch(of course that would never happen) and the car decides to drive off a cliff because the computer thinks it is the road.

Can you imagine how much fun it would take away from some of these people who love to zoom in front of everyone and speed by like you are standing still? I'm sure there would be alot of people who would not like to be in a line up travelling at the same speed.

The technology is probably here already or if not, very soon to be. It would present alot of problems I think.

One would have to consider every type of vehicle on the road, weight, mechanical conditions, road conditions, deer population crossing said roadway, the potential for stopping distances and the list goes on. May be better to let each pilot his own ship.

Mu GPS is great but it has taken me down some cow paths once or twice. I still wouldn't be with out it. They are like lawyers, trust but verify.

What if the road conditions were bad or someone had a flat or other problem? Can't see it ever working on the mass vehicle population.

Which level of the federal government will be responsible for telling everyone that they need to buy new cars and that the classic muscle car you have had since the 60's is no longer allowed to drive on public roads?

The techonolgy is there but is not feasible to make such a thing to happen I remember reading in popular mechanics back in the 50"s that we would have such a thing by the year of 2000. To make this happen there would have to have special roads for this, because the older vehicles would not work there.

It would have to work better than my GPS. Its been lost since last Thanksgiving day. Turned it on for giggles after leaving my neices house about thirty miles from home. Its still wandering around out in the wilderness somewhere. It was very handy when it worked, not dependable enough to put my life in its control though. Joe

Saw a show on the tube awhile back where they were using radar to do that. They had put markers in the highway and the radar tracked them. I think it needed work yet though.

That is in Brick Bradford territory [Time Top]of the 1940's, it is out there but think struggling with the application.

technologically possible, yes. practical, no. It just won't be able to account for all the variables encountered on the road. Only practicle solution is mass transit, bus, train, etc. If you run that out into the boonies it just isn't efficient. Plus, sometimes I want to mash that gas pedal and fly around a curve. Isn't that protected by one of the amendments?
