hello im restoring my first f20 and i was wondering how the throtle hooked up i have a hand throttle that mounts to the steering post and a double handle on the right side that controls the spark i was wondering how the double hooked up and if you just left the throtle hook up coming out of the govener there or if there was a block off plate thank you any pictures that show will be appreciated

I'll try to explain. If the throttle linkage attaches to a rod coming out of the back of the governor (in front of the magneto) you have what is called a "variable speed governor" On early models it will be either aftermarket or n IH "field changeover" The twin levers you speak of, the rear lever would have originally been the throttle control and would have been hooked by a rod down through the hood to a point at the front of the throttle tube to the carburetor on the left side. the parts it hooked to would have been disabled at that time. Without changing a lot of pieces you do not have you can not put it back the way it would have been originally. Hope this helps your question. It should be pretty easy to figure out how to hook yours up if you are not missing pieces. The harder you pull on the rod out of the governor, the faster it will run.

Dear Mr. Cowman,
Please explain the difference between the variable speed and the older style governor. How did the older style work?

What year and are you looking for original? The hand throttle is an aftermarket unit. The double handle... one is the spark control rod and is hooked to the mag, the other is a throttle that hooks to the throttle linkage where it right angles back to the carb by the radiator. The original 2 lever type would be for the single speed governor and only serves to idle the engine, meaning it overrides the governor and the engine is not load controlled while it is in use. The aftermarket or hand throttle was used when an upgraded variable governor was put on a tractor built before 37. These two throttles do not interchange or operate together. If there is a rod sticking out of the back of the governor that can be pulled in and out you have a variable speed governor and should hook up the hand throttle. If there is just a housing sticking out of the back of it you need to hook up the original hand throttle.

Looks like I was typing while cowman answered,

The original governor was set for max speed at no load. The throttle lever allowed the operator to slow the engine by overriding the governor. In this overrode condition the governor did not regulate engine speed and therefore was very limited or could not respond to a load. The variable speed governor adjusted the engine speed via the governor spring. This method allowed the operator to select any speed in the governors range and the governor could react and adjust for the load at the selected speed.

36F30 explained it pretty well. The original single speed governor was designed to regulate speed at 1300 RPM. You could slow the tractor down with the lever but the only thing the governor knew was 1300.
