Using a 3000lb electric winch on a 2N, 8N, and JD850

The manner in which these tractors are put together makes me wonder if pulling from the front end is a bad idea. Have any of You installed electric winches on tractors such as the ones I have? They all have their front ends bolted to castings on the engine. I saw a farmall cub with the whole front end ripped off from the engine. Person was jerking on the front end with another tractor as the mower under the cub got stuck on a stump. I would not be doing any jerking and it would certainly be convenient to pull from the front end of these tractors.

"Person was jerking on the front end with another tractor as the mower under the cub..."

Your quote says it all. I don't think you will hurt your tractor IF you know when to let off the winch control.

My 2 cents.
Rick

Yes, the tractor nor the winch are the problems. The lack of ability to use shovels, crowbars and brains is what breaks machinery.

Rick,
I agree with You. If a person did something ridiculous like chain the back of the tractor to a tree to hold it then pull with the winch things would probably break. The Farmall Cub that was destroyed was a very nice tractor at one time. I didn't see the person jerking on the cub but I saw the results. I wouldn't even block the wheels . Just use the brakes and common sense. I would only be pulling limbs to a chipper and small douglas fir trees.

Tony,

I agree with You completely. I didn't see the person jerking the Cub with the mower high centered on the stump. Saw the results, totally destroyed the tractor. I wouldn't let that person near one of my tractors. I would just use the brakes, and would be pulling piles of limbs to a chipper, and small douglas fir trees.

A 3000lb winch can't exert enough force to hurt that tractor. You'd have to double up the lines and double them up again (i.e. 12,000lb pull), and chain the other end of the tractor to a tree.

A winch does not jerk, so you will be fine.
But !!! I would try to move the chipper to the limbs.
If you drag them with the winch you will pickup small rocks and dirt = Dull chipper.
Don't ask how I know.

Jim,
Good idea about moving chipper to the limbs. My chipper is a wallenstein bx42 pro driven
I'll go ahead and use the winch on the front.

I mounted a 2000# winch on the front of a Farmall BN for a neighbor. It has worked fine to pull felled trees out of the woods to cut up. The winch is fairly slow and it will just slide the tractor if overloaded and the tractor is not on good footing. He's been happy with it.

I think the BN has the same type of front end attachment as tractors I have. I bought the winch I have from HF.It is a 3000 lb. model and it is very slow. I'm going to go ahead and use it on the front of my tractors. It has a mount that slips over a 7/8 or 2 inch trailer ball . It would probably slide my tractors just like the winch You mounted on your friends tractor.
