Creigs list and scams

I have had a 3-73 Detroit engine for sale for a long period of time in the Pittsburgh area I haven't updated it for a long time so it is way back on the list
Today I get an email ... looks legit with a Ph * and the subject line is correct. and although no name listed without paying extra is from area he is saying now the fun part ..

he has requested a receipt to show I saw his email ?????????????

Is this just another way of getting my email ?? He is from Maine and Pittsburgh seems like too far a distance to travel for something that may not be satisfactory to him .. What would you do.

That was my first thought also but hearing of so many ways sneaky snots are trying to any type of info to sell I may be just too apprehensive.
And the motor isn't mine selling for a friend.
Guess I'll wait till he shows up for his morning coffee and let him call.

I would go set up a free email account at google or somewhere just for things I put on craig's list. If it turns out to be fishy just delete the account.

I would also call the number. If the guy sounds wishy washy or screwing with you I would say forget it. If he sounds like he is from Nigeria, hang up right then.

It is entirely possible that it is innocent and he has not turned off the "Read Receipt Requested" option in his mail client and everybody he sends something to gets that. I usually reserve that for important business correspondence, but I know some people (especially technically challenged types) who send this with every message. Personally I have my client set to ignore all "Read Receipt Requests", just seems like a needless waste of electrons to me.

Only other thing that threw a flag Is the fact when relating to himself he didn't capitalize the I
or his name ??

He is correct Phone is near the Abbot section of Maine about a 15 hour drive from here.

Just don't respond to the "read receipt" and give the number a call. I also know plenty of folks who don't bother to use the shift key either.

His grammar is lousy, but not in a Nigerian sort of way. They try to sound highbrow, not like a hillbilly. He's probably legit- give him a call.

I'd ignore the receipt of email thing- you obviously got it, if you call him. If you don't want to call, its none of his business.

There is nothing necessarily evil about requesting a return receipt. Did you put your email address in the posting rather than make the buyer answer through Craigslist? I wouldn't expect a return receipt request to make it through the craigslist mail relay.

A lot of buyers will use a craigslist aggregator like Search Tempest, so it's not too surprising to get a query from an out-of-state buyer. If the buyer seems fishy, just tell him you only want to deal with a local buyer. I suspect the query is legit, but you'll need to make a phone call to know for sure.

Last spring I sold my Yamaha motorcycle on Craigslist. After two or three weeks of queries from local idiots, I had almost given up on selling it. Then I got a query from a guy in Toronto whom I assumed was a scam artist. He turned out to be totally legit and ended up buying the bike at a fair price. Don't instantly discount out-of-town buyers, many are guys just like you. (Of course some are thieves and murderers, too, so be careful.)

Roy, I don't see any thing wrong here, the return receipt-no way. Ignore it. Forget that part. Go ahead and phone cause there is no problem there. The capitol I--i,I miss mine all the time cause my key board shift key is in the wrong place from what i (I) am used to.

At my night job we have microsoft outlook for our city email. Some of the important folks hit the button ask'n for a receipt when they send something out that they need to make sure every one reads. An example would be an email tell'n every one the times for insurance meetings. The problem is some of the flunkies have figured out how to hit the receipt button and think they look like a big shot by use'n it all the time. Last week I got an email with a receipt request, only thing in the email was "Bob called in sick today" so it could just be force of habit or a default setting on his email account.

Any time I get an email from some one on craig's list with a phone number I call them. If they didn't want you to call they wouldn't have put it in the message.

Roy,
most of the time i refer to myself in small letters, i am a lazy typer. you can always tell him it is a cash only deal as cash will not bounce. this day and age it is wise to be careful or some will have your money.

Old Roy he did say it was quite a drive so sounds like he is willing to come get it, not have shipped by a third party, that's usually were the trouble starts. He also asked for information about the unit not just he was interested. I would call him it very well could be a legit sale.

Lots of people leave the receipt set as default. As far as grammar, looks ok, not Rhodes scholar material, but good grammar is not a prerequiste for using the internet.

Give the guy a call, can't hurt.

The easy scammers to pick out never mention the item by name.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am interested in the item you have for sale...

We have had COUNTLESS arguments in this forum about spelling and grammar. Usually the "spelling/grammar isn't important as long as the message gets across" crowd wins because they shout louder.

It's hypocritical of you to get on this guys case for not having perfect spelling/grammar if you have EVER EVER EVER argued in favor of, "Who cares as long as the message gets across?"

Who cares how he spells. As long as you can understand the message. I am not the best speller in the world. Plus I use the hunt and peck method for typing

I would respond back. It won't cost you anything to write back and give a receipt. You are way too "potential scam" happy. you might be pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

I've traveled close to 7 hours one way for a snowmobile, so that should tell you something about distance. I have a buddy who lives in CT and sold a transaxle to someone in AK. How miles is it from Connecticut to Alaska? If you need it or want it very badly, 13 hours isn't that far. How about Connecticut to Ohio for a Nova? Know someone else who did that.

The potential buyer could be headed your way in the near future, or might know someone in the area who could pick it up from you.

Remember, its a small world out there.

And it's "Craigslist"......sorry, I had to

I would reply, but with a seperate email address. I have 2 email adresses. 1 for my everyday use, the other for Craigslist and Ebay. Keeps the junk mail down to a minimum on my regular address.

It sounds like you're being paranoid rather than wanting to sell the engine. Ya, there's scammers out there but there's also a far lot more legit buyers. Wanting the e-mail receipt might just be so he knows you received it. If you call him confirms it but if you don't respond, he will either think you didn't get it or you're not interested in selling it to him. I know other people and have had it happen myself where my e-mail automatically goes into a junk folder because the security doesn't like the name being used or some other dumb reason. When I call the person, they look in the junk folder and find it. It's better to respond to the e-mail request rather than have him keep sending you e-mails thinking you didn't receive it or just decide you're not interested in selling it that much.

I had a guy from Maine drive out here to northern NY to get a Farmall H engine block that he won on ebay, so it is not surprising to me that someone might come that far. Never heard of the receipt thing before.

I just sold a 6ft shell sign to a guy in australia,i live in ohio.A guy from indianapolis showed up with cash in hand to pick it up.He said it was going into a cargo container heading to australia.

Have done a lot of biz on Craigs list in past. But the last few recent post all I got in return was request from perverts.
Whats up with that?

Stan

LOL I know what you mean there I did get a response awhile back from a lonely woman.... so she said , but might want to look at the motor for her brother... I flagged that one .

What are you asking for the engine? Guy I was talking to today was asking about one. We are bout 1 1/2 hrs north of you, are working in Cranberry for a week or so. Also what kind of shape is it in, does it have a pto on it?

You've been on here long enough that spelling, grammar, and capitalization shouldn't phase you....

I just called the number and a lady answered.Put that tinfoil back on the rabbit ears and call/sell your stuff.......+-

Difference here though we iz all friends. and friends tend to overlook other friends short comings..... I had tin foil on my rabbit ears he wouldnt leave them on ???

If he left a phone number - call him. Usually if people are willing to talk to you on the phone, its not a scam. Tell him to bring the CASH with him and come down and see it.

I have sold a lot of stuff on Craigslist. When I first started selling, I didn't put my phone number on the ad. From time to time, I would get E-mails from someone willing to buy whatever I was selling, without actually coming out to see the item. They would contact me later to "arrange for shipping". I would E-mail them back giving them my phone number and asking for theirs. I would never hear from them again. Since then, I always put my phone number in the ad and I specify "no-E-mails please". I never respond to any E-mails. I have never had a problem since then. The first one in my yard with the cash, gets the goods.
