O/T 2000 FORD WON'T START WITH KEY

I went to start the truck this morning and nothing. All lights, bells, whistels work. I checked the voltage 12.5 a little low but should do something. Put batt charger on for 3hrs and took batt off pos to load test. One hung on good the other hung on but not good. So out comes the test meter to see if a draw is there. Found the only draw was the gauge cluster mem but only.256 ma. Tried to jump at relay on fender started right up ok [BY NOW I'M PIZZED OFF. I HATE elec probelms] Checked for voltage at little wire to activate relay nothing. ALL fuses are good that I can find. ANY IDEAS????????? Thanks Trucker

Reach up under the dash on the steering column for your ignition switch (the switch itself). Bet you'll find it is loose and moves up and down the column a little. Slide it up toward the wheel a little and try again. Had to take the access cover and mount plate under the column off to adjust/tighten mine. This was on a 91 buty I'm sure it's still the same on yours.

Good luck.

Dave

If it's an automatic, neutral safety switch. Stick, the safety switch for the clutch pedal.

Checked all grounds all good. Tried the switch and it was tight. It just is not getting power down the signal wire on the fender relay . Started just fine yesterday and since I've owned it [about 1 year] just seems like a fuse is bad or broken wire.

ALL RIGHT MISTER rrlund!!!!!! WIGGLED the auto shifter and TA-DA!!!!! THANK YOU all for the ideas. As stated send location for beers. Looks like I'm in the market for a new steering colum for my truck the shifter is quite loose [like some animal has been doing pull ups on it]. Help like this makes me thank god I vist this site. Oh just to make it good I use this truck to pull a 42 IH M,40 IH B,45 JD A,580 CASE backhoe,45 IH A w/c153 & soon to have a restored 36 HART PARR 70 ON TIP TOE. I don't think the beer will be good by the time it gets to you dave2.

You may not be getting voltage to your starter solenoid. When you twist your key to make a start you send voltage to your starter solenoid.
You may be able short across the small terminals
on the solenoid to see if the engine will crank.
Be careful attempting this. Hal

I just put a "new" steering column in my (1989) f-350 last week. It's amazing the things that it can fix:

1) My left front blinker started working again
2) My steering wheel isn't loose anymore.
3) A fencing pliers is no longer standard operating equipment for starting the truck.

Didn't fix the horn, but hey 3 out of 4 ain't bad.

I went to great lengths to put a non-tilt steering column out of an older truck into it so I won't ever have to deal with it again. The tilt steering is what makes everything go bad. The older column bolted in fine, I just had to smash out some plastic under the instrument panel to convince it. Sadly that's probably not even an option after 1997.

dave is right just replaced ignition switch on my 86 f150 what a pain nothing wrong with old one after looking but already put new one in all it needed was adjusted and tightewned be sure to take off ground at battery

No problem. Even a blind squirl finds a nut some times. When something doesn't work without warning,it's usually something simple.

The tilt in my 85 got bad. I used a pair of pliers on that one for a while to turn the key farther, then I figured out all I had to do was turn the key with my right hand and push up on the wheel with my left. Old habits are hard to break though. I still did it for months after I got it fixed.

Hah! Tell me about it. I rummaged around for my fencing pliers today for way too long before I remembered that I took it out the truck so I would stop grabbing it every time I got in. Outsmarted myself yet again!
