Bear attack OT

A young man was raking leaves in a residential area of Hendersonville, NC. A black bear attacked him and, having nothing else, he defended himself with the rake. The bear bit the rake handle in two but the man was able to run to his truck and get in. The bear chased him to the truck and briefly jumped in the trailer behind the truck. The bear left.

Hendersonville is near Pisgah National forest.

I live about 60 miles East of Hendersonville in SC. There is no open season on bears here. A few miles away from me some boys were hunting and came across a black bear and killed it. They were dumb enough to put it on Facebook and had to pay a $1800 fine.

Our neck of the woods has grizzlies and there were several attach this year and people killed. During hunting season the bears key on gunshots and know, as a minimum, they"ll be a gut pile. Sometimes they claim the kill and the game department will issue a new tag for the game. I believe the bears are recovered here and their numbers are growing. Since they require 50 sq miles minimum per adult, they have to start moving out from their strongholds and that means more chance of bear-human interactions. Four grizzly bears were killed within 5 miles of where I live, crossing the highway or killing free ranging chickens.

A women got attacked by a black bear in Missoula while jogging on a city trail and she fought the bear off and he ran. The next person may not be that lucky.
I imagine back East where more people are retiring into forested areas, there is more opportunity for bear-human contacts and they"ll me a lot more of these instances.

Here in Michigan black bears have pretty much been found in the UP or very far northern parts of the lower for many years. Now we're seeing reports of them as far south as Grand Rapids. A few years ago one was spotted and pictured near Camden, which is only five miles north of the Ohio state line. Seems that they are definitely moving south, maybe they'll develop a taste for coyotes and take care of another problem

Interesting on the bears going to the sound of gunshots. No Grizzlies here and I'd like to keep it that way. Grizzlies weren't here in colonial days.

For the past 40 years there have been occasional sighting of black bears here, supposedly they were going from the mountains, which are in sight of me on a clear day, to the swamps in the middle to lower part of the state. There is a national forest down river from the area where the bear was killed. It was originally farms and is now managed for hunting and for tree farming.
Speaking of swamps, there is the Congaree National Monument, I think it's called, below Columbia, the State capitol. It's a swamp along the Congaree river which is fairly large since it drains a good third of the state. It has huge pine and cypress trees and is flooded in wet weather. During a dry spell my wife and I walked from the park headquarters over to the river. The walk is several miles along trails. I saw deer and wild hog tracks and a bobcat track, but no bear tracks.

I live about 20 miles from where this occured, just South of Hendersonville in SC. We have a short season on bears here. One week of rifle season then a week when hounds can be used. From what we've seen on the games cams that my neighbor and I have up, we have too many bears in our area. They tear up our fruit trees breaking branches to get at the fruit. I reckon when we have someone killed by a sow with cubs the Dept. of Natural Resources will wake up and extend the season. There were 39 bears harvested in my county this year and I would bet the farm that wasn't even close to the 10% that need to be killed.
