Knee Replacement

Had knee replacement surgery on the eighth. It went pretty well, I am probably younger at 62 than most that get them. I went home on the tenth on crutches and Oxycontin. I was off the Oxycontin and crutches by the 21st. and able to start driving. Yesterday I started doing some light duty projects, and today I replaced an axle under a light trailer. I got it done but the last of that project was a little tough as the pain was getting a little strong so I knocked off early and came in. They send rehab people every other day to keep me pushing along at exercising. but they measured my flexing and extension each time and I was able to keep well ahead of their expectations. Anyone who is contemplating it, I would recommend it. It works better than my original, and is already less painful, and I already have more range of motion.

Sounds good, you will be glad u did it. my father in law had 3
of them! Both knees done but One got infected so they took
it out put in a antibiotic spacer, then another knee. He had
bad knees from milking cows, and says the replacements
were the best thing he did. No more pain and can get around
pretty good, he's 81!

Had my right one done July 28. Still doing physio twice a week at hospital along with daily exercises at home. Walking much better than I have in years, but find stairs a little trying yet. I'm 67 and darn well should have had this done years ago.

I have needed one for ten year, I am 60 now a woman ran over me when I was on my motorcycle in 95, they did not want to do it then because I was too young. The thoughts of being laid up just scares me to death, I was bed ridden for a year after the accident.

Glad to hear your knee is doing well. I should have you talk to my dad. He has been putting it off for years and it almost pains me to watch him move around. He says the day he can't sleep from the knee he'll get it done.

Colin, Who was your surgeon? I had left hip done in Nov of '03, left knee done in Nov of '07 and right knee done in Nov of '10. All done by Dr Benson in Manchester.
Praying for a speedy recovery for you!
Dave

Animal, I was 37 with the first and 40 with the second. I was on the 450 a week after I came home from surgery. The snow needed moved so I went and took care of it. You won't be laid up for long.

It is Dr. Gonzales at Dartmouth Hitchcock Manchester. Real nice Guy, moved up from Maryland a few years ago and does usually 6 a week between hips and knees.

I had both knees replaced about five years ago at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and have been pain free ever since. They did one in January so I would not have any trouble with planting and the other in June as to be fit at harvest time. After about four weeks I could drive and do most anything. I was to the point where I was close to a wheel chair and if I ever came to a stair I would look around for an elevator or get tears in my eyes. I can now walk all day long and even if I get tired my knees will not hurt. I would never put it off. There are two things that they are very carefull about and that is blood clots and infection. Also if anybody is going to have this done be sure to do the physical therapy they recommend. You can call me if you have any questions. 810-655-4859

Had my right knee done the Monday before Thanksgiving last year. Dr. Benson did 4 that day! He likes to do them on Monday & Tuesday, so the vict -- uh -- patients are discharged by Friday! LOL I went home on Wednesday. In the hosstible for just under 48 hours. Did out patient therapy, and was done with that by the middle of January.

I would never recomend putting off replacement. I have a hip and a knee,Both should have been done much earlier. I was 79 with the knee and 73 with the hip. When needed, go ahead, have it done!! The therapy is of upmost important. I am now 81 and have NO pain from the replacements!!

AAAAmen ta that! Had my left one done 4 yrs ago (at age 57) same deal. No pain. Glad I did it. Some don't fare so well tho. Co-worker was one of those 1 in 2,000,000 people who reject the foriegn material. Suffered for 6 mos of them telling him he wasn't doing PT enough etc. Ended up full of rejection fluid/infection , had to do it all over again with different implant. Successfull second time.

showcrop, Guys,, Slightly different, At age 51(3 yrs ago) RS in March, LS in Dec 08 I had Both Shoulders REPLACED, not repaired. I lived with pain at levels that would drive most people insane for 10 yrs I just wasn't sure about doing it as the people I visited with had mixed results. Finely found the right Dr, Followed his instruction the the letter and have had no problems with them. No I do not dig post holes any more by hand and a few other things like that. But My Dr. in Austin Tx is the Man as far as I am concerned. Hope this helps!

John A.

I agree! I will say get a good doctor and do the rehab. Mine is 8 weeks out but doing pretty much what I wanted at 3 weeks. Get it done before your muscles deteriorate from lack of use by not being active. They will have to be rebuilt if you don't get it done before they deteriorate.
