I have been trying to get spark on our 1946 ford 8n. New point condesor roter coil cap. My question is on the weights in the deistributer is two metal straps. One of the straps is shorter than the other is that normal.

I can't help you with this one. You might get a quicker response if you post it on the Ford 2N,9N,8n Forum.
My only suggestion is be sure dour dist. is getting a good ground back to the battery.
Can't help on the governor question. I would like to know the correct answer in case it ever comes up again.

Bill.

Well first off you do not have a 1946 8N they did not make them till 1948. So first off figure out what you have. 9N 1939 to 1942. 2N 1942 to 1947 and 8N 1948 to 1952 and the late 1950 was the first side mount distributor set up. If it has 3 forward speeds it is a 9N or 2N if it has 4 then an 8N. Thing to check as for spark do you have power to the top of the coil?? If not then work back to find where it stops. If you have power at the top of the coil you may have shorted something out inside the distributor which is very easy to do

Well it did not match the 9n so it is ether a 2n or a 8n i have 6.3 +/- at the top of the coil and it drops down to 2.2 when turning it over i checked for a ground at the points strap that hooks the condesor to the points and its ok unless we hooked it wrong.

So then does it have 3 forward gears or 4???? If it has 3 then it is a 2N if 4 an 8N. As for the volts you get 6.3 with the points open and 2 something with them closed is about what you should get. You did remember to put the rotor back in didn't you?? Yes I ask because I have seen that many times and no rotor no spark. Take a old plug and gap it as wide as you can say about 3/16 or so and hook it to one of the plug wires and spin it over holding it on the block some place. You should get a good blue/white spark that jumps that gap

09heritage.......you ask......"My question is on the weights in the deistributer is two metal straps. One of the straps is shorter than the other is that normal".......yep. Be certain to use yer SHORT 3/16" screw to hold the points and not the more common 1/4" screw that is used to hold the condenser inplace. (neubies gitt'um mixed up)

You do know ittza 2-bolt, 15-min job to remove the weird 4-nipple frontmount dizzy and install the points (0.015") on the kitchen table, don't you??? Just unsnapple yer capple and letter dangle. Installation is a reversal of the the removal ...except... gently start yer 2-bolt and then twirl yer rotor until the dizzy tang drops into the OFF-SET cam drive slot. then gently tighten yer 2-bolts and re-snapple yer capple. Simple, eh?

Remember to "polish" the INVISIBLE corrosion from between the points. After assembly, (0.015") I clamp a clean $1 bill between the points and pull. Iff'n yer really cheap, tear a strip of HEAVY brown paper from a grocery sack and use that. Iff'n you don't "polish" the points, guess what??? WEAK SPARKIES!!! .........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Well I think I got it. Come to find out the dist. is grounding out threw the top screw were the coil makes contact to the points.I removed the breaker plate and still the same thing then i took the point out and same thing so im ordering a new distributor. Oh and 3 forward thanks for your help

(quoted from post at 11:09:22 10/13/11) I have been trying to get spark on our 1946 ford 8n. New point condesor roter coil cap. My question is on the weights in the deistributer is two metal straps. One of the straps is shorter than the other is that normal.
The advance weight springs should be the same length, and there are 2 on each side. I just replaced my advance weight assembly, when I noticed the main/heavy spring was broken about halfway up. There is also a nice electronic ignition available to replace the points. Way cheaper than a whole new distributor.
