I have needed some carpenters, painters plummers etc. Many do not have any insurance. I am not as worried about liability but if the guy gets hurt?? (falls of ladder or stagging) I know state laws vary seems like here they have to be selfemployed and have liability. Any employees than its comp. The ones i hired did have it. There was some seminar about hire college kids to paint, clean etc but what about if they get hurt? Talk to me guys.

It's gotten to the point for me that there is only one way to look at things like this. Given the number of lawyers in this country and the money hungry, litigious nature of many of them, you could be sued by pretty much anybody, any time, for any reason....and there isn't a damm thing you can do about it. Therefore I've gotten to the point that I don't worry about any of it anymore. To me doing so isn't worth the time and energy it takes to do all of that worrying.... on the off chance that something MIGHT happen.....because there's an equal or better chance that nothing will happen. Besides I've always heard that you can't get blood from a turnip and here lately this turnip has been bled nearly dry so go ahead and waste your money suing me cause in the end even if you win, your still gonna lose......

But that's just my opinion and your own thoughts, opinions, and the laws in your state may vary...

I know when I was growing up any contractor we hired had to be insured and bonded. If they had employees they had workers comp or were run off until they did have it. It just ain't worth losing everything you worked for because some idiot fell off a ladder and can't ever work again.

Too many scum lawyers out there that will sue you for anything. What I have done is ONLY hire day labor with a person that you know, like BIL, or a Friends son etc.. And pay $100 for an 8 hour day. The best way to make sure that they dont get hurt is to make sure they dont climb a ladder, dont run a chainsaw, only stack the wood etc.
I had my BIL over a few years ago. $100 for the whole day I paid for pizza when done. I cut down trees, BIL stacked logs, broke up branches and put in firepit. I didnt let BIL run the chainsaw, cause he has never done it B4.
When I built my home 12 years ago I only had subcontractors that had proof of insurance.

I agree with Wayne,I don't ever worry, even the good Book says "worry profits a man nothing"

it's insurance companies, and lawyers that have wrecked this country, not to mention the pol a ticians.

Just part of the price you pay for not hiring a reputable contractor in the first place that pays his bills and plays by the rules.

I am self employed with my son as a partner. We cary liability ins. but are not required to carry workman's comp. We couldn't collect on it even if we did pay into it because we work for ourselves. Just because someone has liability ins. doesn't mean you can't be sued if that person got hurt on your job site. The liability only covers him if he does some sort of damage to your property. Liability and workman's comp. are two different types of insurance all together. The comp. will cover him medically if he gets hurt on the job. In my case, my own medical policy pays for my injuries. An insurance certificate will tell you what coverage's the contractor carries.
