I have seen it before, its on public tv whyy here in nj ,the story of a man building a cabin in alaska , One mans wilderness, He filmed it all himself many years ago, It is a great show to watch a real reality show

I once saw some of the show, I believe he homesteaded in Alaska in the 60"s. It was really neat to see how he built the cabin, even fashioned his own door hinges.

LOVE IT!!! Always a favorite with me. I do wish there was enough freedom left to build what you want, out in the middle of nowhere & not have to bow to zoning, inspections, utilities, etc. And the best darn menu, to boot. Really must have been nice.

Saw that program several times. What TV should be all about instead of all the sports and trash programing.
One of my favorite scenes was when the airplane came and amongst other things brought him some new wool socks. The smile on his face is priceless.

saw it years ago also on PBS, they played it when PBS pledges for money to stay on the air here in Colorado...we call it mooching for dollars,,,,the only thing is they played it so much it wore a grove in the record...other wise was good to watched once or twice, but not twenty times...my opinion

Love that show, but I have to wonder what that mans experience with women was before he got in his canoe and paddeled up stream.

Don"t you love it they play some really good shows when they are mooching for money. They say so you can keep seeing these shows send us your money. Nobody must send them money, because you never see those shows except when they want more money.

I had an aunt and uncle who lived on Lake Clark, Alaska from the '50s till the '90s. Dick Proenneke built his cabin on Upper Lake Clark. Not sure of the distance but it could have been 100 miles to the North. Anyway they preceded him by a few decades.

They lived with a few neighbors. Aunt got her pilots license and was able to get out to Anchorage once in awhile. They raised four kids.

In the summer, they operated a small glass jar cannery for salmon down on the Alaska Peninsula. That is the land mass that tapers into the Aleutian Islands. I spent the summer of '62 gill net fishing for salmon and canning. I first had to help build a small Quonset hut cannery, a dock, and hand drive a well point into permafrost. Product was shipped to patients of my doctor father who were allergic to commercial processed salmon in cans. Something about the chemical lining in the factory cans.

Although she couldn't see Russia from either location, my aunt won a seat in the Alaska congress.

My 16 year old cousin was lost at sea several years later. I could have faced the same fate when my uncle wanted me to tie off our 30' boat to a scow that was underway at night in 10' seas. He wanted me to jump from the pitching bow of our boat onto the larger craft. It's a good thing I was seasick because I might have otherwise. I could barely stand up.

I like that one too about the man in his Alaska cabin. Last evening PBS had another nice one about hummingbirds. The photography was outstanding. And of course they're still "mooching for dollars".

Several times a year Wisconsin Public Television
has what out neighborhood calls "BEGGING TIME"
They play the same shows over and over, everyone
is sick of it!

Local PBS has said they will shorten begging campaign by 1 day for each $50k raised in response to viewers/listeners complaints. Have heard a lot of mixed reaction to that approach; some say that in today's economy there are other more worthy and necessary causes.
