Chevy fuel guage

Chevy 2500, year 2000. Fill up gas tank, gauge may or may not go to empty, stay there few seconds or few minutes, go back to "Full". Doesn't always do it. Been doing it year & half now. Aware that fuel pump needs gas to cool it & always keep tank between half full & full. Doesn't affect running of engine. Is this a sign of fuel pump failing soon or something that is minor?

that is just the float part of the fuel pump going bad. the only problem is that it is made to the pump and you have to replace the pump to fix it. around here they sell for around 400. it doesnt mean the pump is bad just the float part that works the guage is bad. if you dont have a problem with the guage how it works i would drive it till the fule pump starts acting up unless you want to spend the money.

Sending unit bad.You don"t have to replace the fuel pump assy since the sending unit is available from GM separately.

That is a problem that GM is very aware of. The 1999,2000 and 2001 pickups all had fuel gauge problems develop. To replace you drop the tank and put in a whole new assembly which is cost prohibitive. My 2001 has its guage jump all over, shows empty when full, jumps around, but usually half tank on down it will show somewhat accurately. I have found if I leave the key to on while filling that it seems to work more accurately. It has nothing to do with ground wire, this is a GM design flaw that is very costly to remedy.

You do NOT have to replace the whole fuel pump module assembly. Go to your local dealer and tell them you need a fuel level sensor. Ive done hundreds here at the dealer I work at. It is an easy job to do. Just comes with the float arm and the sensor its self with the wiring.

See if you can disconnect the wire to the sending unit and ground it to the vehicle. If it acts the same the gauge is probably bad. If it works great the sending unit is bad. The sending unit is in with the fuel pump so I would change it also to keep you from having to pull the gas tank off again next year.

]Ditto.....exactly like my 2001 Chevy PU........I rely on the trip odometer.

always getting told that it don"t cost any more $ to fill it if it"s half full/half empty...never rely on gauges to be that accurate...gets half, get told to stop at station.

have codes checked. you probably have a fault code in the computer for the level sensor. the sensor itself is not that expensive. I have seen lots of them do this.

common problem with Chevy clusters...stepper motor issues. Pull the "ICP" fush and clean the blades up...this will help short term. I'm afraid what's going to happen is the guage will slowly quit, then the whole cluster will go black.
Pile of folks on the internet repairing them- I used Souther Electronics out of Richmond. Totally rebuilt it, 1 day turn around, about $150 bucks.

Good youtube videos on how to remove dash as well.

Stepper motor failing. My '05 Chev Impala has the Tach,Fuel and some times temp guages malfunctioning.Local shop wants $354.00 to fix it. Online shops quote upwards of $165.00 or less. I.m trying to figure out how to get the cluster out of the dash.Haven't got a handle on it yet but given time?

the cluster problems was on the 03 and up model trucks. we have several 04 chevys at work and all have had the clusters replaced. that is not the problems with the 2000 and 2001 it is the sending unit on the fuel pump.
