P-51 crash at Air Races...

Went into part of the Box Seats..they say "Mass Injuries"...
That old Packard engine was really running great, too..
The pilot stayed with the plane and steered it into the asphalt, missing the Bleachers...

I dated agirl in the 80's who's step dad was a plane owner and WWII vet. He said after the war he bought a P-51 from the US for $500 which included a spare engine in a crate shipped to your location. He flew it home to a local "small town" airstrip, which the landing scared him silly cuz he didn't think he'd have enough room. He sold the plane soon after and years later sold the engine to buy a 57 chevy. He wished he still had all of them. The P-51's and P-38's were my dad's best "friends" as he flew a B-17.

Thanks. They don't show a lot here either but thats ok. I sure feel for the families. Sounds like some safety issues in the past so now the blame game begins.

What a tragedy.

Though I've never seen the Reno air races, I still hope to do so.

Ignoring a steam locomotive, there is nothing like the sound of the big military reciprocating aircraft engines.

Hopefully, the powers that be will not end the air races.

I think I saw him race at Oshkosh, WI some years ago. Never been to Reno; but it is on the future agenda. Sad way to end a career! 54 injured, & at least 2 dead is the latest I saw!

I have been going every other year for 15 years. We were planning on leaving for Reno this morning. This was a terrible accident. The rest of the races were canceled. Now there is some talk they will never have them again. Hope not. It always has been a great experience. It is not just the races, they have aerobatics, military flyovers, ground exibits, antique and homebuilt airplanes. There is nothing like the sound of those V12 and big radials pushing hard. If they have them again I will be there.

Here is a link to the latest info in the Reno newspaper. Listened to the actions following the crash on the police radio.

I hope the event can continue, but there has been some ongoing pressure to have it cancelled. Too much growth in the area and too many liberals looking out for everyone else.

What a horrible accident, as bad as it was it could have been much worse if the pilot had ejected and let the plane go where it wanted. I was at the air show in Michigan at Selfridge Air Base when the Wing Walker fell to his death about 500 feet in front of me, I thought that was bad, we were in the VIP Tents, now this. I don't know if I will ever go to another Air Show..

Seems that every year another vintage WW11 Fighter is destroyed...either on takeoff or during the race..
This one, I am not so sure the Pilot was in control...there is the one picture that you do NOT see the pilot sitting up and as it was going in, there is NO apparent upward deflection of the Elevator..
The missing Trim-Tab should not have caused the crash..
I do hope I get to go see these races someday...!!
