Hey fellas

Would you be scared of a Kewanee auger? Guy just south of me has a hydraulic lift 8 by 66 direct drive auger with hydraulic powered swing away hopper for $1000. I'd prefer a 10 inch, but the price seems too good to pass up. Biggest thing that gives me pause is that Kewanee is no longer in business. It looks to me like there's nothing specific to Kewanee on this thing regarding parts.

most of the parts would be off the shelf, ie bearings, flightings ect, and just about anything else could be fabricated. sounds like a good price for the auger. i'd buy it.

Kewanee made farm equipment for many years and made them good.I wouldn"t be afraid of ANYTHING with their name on it.Like glennster said, all parts are off the shelf of any farm supply store or equipment dealer.

Those hydraulic augers were trouble. You either blow a hose,or the tractor hydraulics gets to hot from the restriction of oil flow to run the auger right. It also will plug if it's fed to much grain.

If it is in good condition and you are determined to buy it I would go ahead and get it and convert it to PTO drive.Get rid of the HYD motor, use it on something else, not a complete loss. HYD drives are trouble. Tractor and drive motors get stressed from high temperatures and posssible Hyd oil depletion.Just my opinion!JH

i think you guys miss understand what was sead direct drive refures augers stay hooked to draw bar and are power by PTO direct drive the swing auger is moved with the hyd motor and most likey drives with gear box off the PTO this is a good set up

Hey Fellas

A few are misunderstanding how this unit is setup.

The tractor hooks to the drawbar at the bottom end of the auger and stays there during use. The PTO is directly mounted to the screw. The auger is fed by a drag that can go under hopper bottom trailers or wagons. The drag is powered by a hydraulic motor. This is a very popular setup these days, but most augers are now 10, 12, or 13 inch.

I went and looked at it today. He ran it for me and I didn't see any flexing like the auger was bent. there is some rust-through in the tubing right at the base of the auger that will have to be patched. The flighting is getting pretty sharp, but it's not folded over yet. I'm gonna put about 8000 bushel of corn and 2000 bushel of wheat through it a year, so it'd last me 100 years as it is. I REALLY like the hydraulic lift... Next egg check comes on the 15th. I hope he doesn't sell it by then. If only it were about 15 feet shorter.

I"ve bought similar size for fewer dollars, but would always gauge value to wear- edges of flighting thin? Flighting is standard, easy to replace. Gearboxes are generic, usually 1:1 ratio, worth a few hundred bucks. Main decision is....will it do the job? BTW- want to increase capacity on any auger? DOUBLE FLIGHT the bottom couple feet! ie- you have two scoop shovels pulling grain in, instead of one! Once the grain gets into the tube, the single flighting will move it! I double flight all my retrofits since learning that years ago.

Hey JMS,

That's a GREAT idea! I think I'll take it to the welding shop and have them double flight the first four feet or so.

Thanks for most of the input, everyone.
