686 International Harvester

I am looking at a 686 with the 310 German Diesel. It ahs 3200 hrs. average sheet metal, one new rear other cracked bad,fronts new,cab.They will put original fenders back on and take the cab. $9000.00 I have a 300 IH utility fast hitch no problems newly painted. What would be a deal for me on a trade to boot?
 
686's have held their value well and there is a small but avid group of people that are looking for them. The value for each is going to depend on who you are bargaining with. Some dealers want to make good money on both ends of the deal. I would say the final numbers if the deal was made where I live would be you will receive 2500 dollars for yours and you might get him down to 8250 to 8500 dollars on his. A person that would be keeping the 300 to use might be more willing to go 3000 to 3200 since he is not looking to turn it into a quick buck. The bad tire might be a sticking point as he most likely is not going to want to swallow the better part of 1000 dollars to replace it. If your lucky maybe you can get him to put a good used tire on for the money we talked if you don't care about the treads matching.
 
Keep the cab on,and take the fenders to put on at a later date-if you still want a "topless" tractor.
 
That's interesting. Grand-father-in-law still has the 686 he bought new (traded SuperMTA). Last I drove it it only had about 1700 hours on it. Not german diesel though. It will need new rear rims though. I'd like to have it but I suspect uncle in law will insist on selling it.
 
If you can do it hand the man 9 grand and keep the 300 . Even if you sell it you will get 2x as much as he will give you . Every tractor I ever sold or traded I wish I had back !!
 
If uncle-in-law wants to "sell" it,you better make plans NOW to buy it!talk to the rest of the family,they may side with you to keep grandpa's tractor"in the family".
