Why are the Pecans falling off my Pecan Tree

Pecan tree looked like it was going to bear quite heavily this fall. Now we are finding pecans on the ground. They fell off before maturing (Cental Missouri). Why is it dropping nuts prematurely? This tree is about 18 years old. Been bearing nuts for about six years now.

I am glad you posted this, mine is doing the same thing here in N.C. for some reason. I don't know why so I am waiting on an answer also.

Maybe because of the hot dry summer we had then now cool and wet again and I do not know for sure in your area but had some pretty strong winds a night or 2 ago and that may have dropped some. I need to go and look at my Pecan tree and see if they have any thing on them. So far I have yet to get one single nut that can be eaten and they are at least 10 years old

i myself think its the weather, been one year for the books, but on the lighter side, until i hear a better reason; im going with Gravity,LOL

Old , They won't bear nuts until they are 12 to 15 years old. This one started at 13 years , and not too many the first year usually (according to books and Dpt. of Agriculture articles).

I could be wrong on how old these pecan trees are but I do know they have had nuts the last 3 years but none have had any meat in side of them. I went and got the WD45 that I forgot where I had parked and when I did looked at the pecan trees and did see a few nuts but they looked very small and probably have no meat in them. Now the walnuts on the other hand they are doing well and should be giving me head aches soon, yep they love to hit a guy on the head when you walk around

My guess would be stress. Plants get stressed from the weather, too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry and insects. I've read in some of the old gardening books that if you have an apple tree that is bearing little or no fruit, you take a saw and start pruning and threaten to cut it down if it doesn't shape up and the stress will make it start producing.

Does the nut have a pin hole in it surrounded by a dark moist stain. If so you have Pecan Weevil.

Nut Curculio will also cause nut drop. The adult is dark gray to reddish-brown with a slightly curved snout that is approximately one third of their body length. The larvae are small creamy white grubs that are found inside the nut. The adult punctures in the nut are very visible and cause sap bleeding that resembles a tobacco stain.

Stress from not enough or bad timing in watering will also cause nut drop.
If the tree is loaded down with nuts and only some are dropping the tree may be thining the crop for the good of what is left.

LSU Ag Center has a lot of info about pecans on their web site.

I've been seeing plenty of leaves turning yellow and falling off trees already in northern Indiana and Illinois. On pretty hearty trees like maple and even some oak. First noticed it a couple of weeks ago, been looking for it now. I can't figure that out either. Got hot, around 90 for about three weeks straight, but have had plenty of precipitation, so I would figure everything would be growing like mad, like out of the rain forest. This is only August, not November.

You got me.

Some fruit trees shed fruit because of over production.but check the soil for inadequate water, may also need a feed.
