I got charged $200 to replace a water pump on a 861 Ford tractor. 4 hours at $50. 4 hours seems like too much time for a trained mechanic. I know I should have gotten an estimate but I didn't and I just paid the bill. Did I get took?

WHERE did you find a "trained mechanic" who will work on your tractor for $50 an hour??? I just talked an older lady tonight who is hard up and was charged over $600 (parts and labor) at a small independent shop for replacing the radiator and waterpump on a '94 Exploder!

Auto parts store radiator runs about $120 and waterpump is $35!

Unless there were problems (bolts that broke), it would have been about a one-hour job.

Did they "work her over"? HOW do guys like that sleep at night?

Because that is what the Mitchell flat rate book shows. Or it had better show, Get them to show you the flat rate on the job. And do NOT let them charge you for work twice. Example: R&R radiator and THEN R&R Water pump. Two different flat rates for this BUt the R&R water pump may include removing the radiator so there should not be a second charge. The service writers get paid on how much they cahrge . Question them!

Demends on what was mounted to the water pump. I changed one on a 350 Oldsmobile once and even had to take a motor mount off to get the water pump changed. It was a nightmare, an all day job. Said I would never own another Oldsmobile, a few months later they went out of business. Wonder why.
