question on lift discs

I am looking at a Kewanne 14 foot disc and an IH model 37 10 foot disc. I only need it for about 10 acres and so actually might rather have the narrower one. In general, is there a difference in the weight per disc (how well it cuts) between wider and narrower discs. Say given the same model would a 18 footer cut any deeper than a 12 footer? I am hoping to be able to not have to plow if I use this heavy lift disc. I have been using a light 7 foot 3 point disc and it won't cut at all unless I plow first.

I had both what you are talking about except my McCormick was a 9' and the Kewanne was a 13'. The McCormick was by far the best disk, would cut better and was angle adjustable for easier pulling and not diging ditches at sides like the non angle Kewanne did if you could get it to the same depth. Both had good blades. But the No. 37 is not a heavy disk as it is called a finishing disk the same as the Kewanne. That McCormick could be avaible with either white iron grease type bearings or greasless type (and a simple type bearing that I think is easily avaible and Kewanne has a complicater high $$$$ bearing if you can even find them). Both would be avaible with about a 7" blade spacing but the No. 37 was also avaible with a 9" blade spacing, I prefered the 7".

Leroy's points are very valid. Weighting the disk can increase the depth of cut. I would go with your impression and choose the smaller width. I do not know what you are pulling it with, but it will take 70 HP to pull the 10' at 5 inches deep (opinion in clay tough ground.) Jim

I had an IH 37- great old disc.

No matter how well a disc cuts, you need to plow first in sod, to get the sod turned under. You can cut it up with the disc with several passes, but you'll have all the dead grass at the top- it needs to be turned under. And the cost of fuel for multiple passes is much more of a factor these days.
