1999 Jeep Laredo Or Cherokee

Hi,

I have a chance to buy a 1999 Jeep Cherokee or Laredo , can't remember now . It's a four door. It has 180,000 miles , but motor was rebuilt 20,000 miles ago . It is a 4X4 with the quaddrive , auto trans , V8 motor , sun roof, A/C , 16 inch wheels . Looks good. Guy is asking $3,200.00 for it , but may come down . I test drove it yesterday for about a 10 mile round trip .Drove ,ran ,rode, and handled good . Check engine light stayed on . Motor sounded good . Needs tires . What are the pros and cons of these vechiles ? Anything to look for besides the usual ? Are these good vechiles ? I've heard both . Thanks for any and all information

Turn ignition switch to on three times (do not start). Leave on third time and codes should appear in the mileage location. Be ready to write.

Works on other Chrysler/Dodge vehicles.

I bought a 1999 Cherokee for my wife to beat around in four years ago for a little more money than that, but WAY less miles, and the 6 cyl. engine. That V8 is going to suck gas. I'm not sure I'd want it if it were given to me! And with those miles, unless you want to be fixing, it sounds like a bad deal to me.

I'd NEVER buy another one !

Those are money pits always something going wrong with them. Not very good gas mileage either.

Think Honda Pilot if you want to tow small loads or better yet CRV. You will pay more up front but save alot in repairs.

I have a 1988 Commanche which is the same as a Cherokee in pichup form. They are good vehicles with some caveates.
1) The 4 cylinder engine was too small and made the owners hate them. So the 4.0 6 clyinder engine or the V8.
2) The automatic transmissions failed early and often. So plan a repair and upgrade. You know you can fix it.

It'll go where you have the guts to take it.

I own 2 Jeep Cherokee one is 1996 and 2001 both 4.0 6 cyl have drove both several miles with minmun problem, but I would stay away from the V8, gas hogs and a friend that I work with has had nothing but problems with his V8 Jeep.

That's plenty for it, especially with Chrysler's quality, or lack thereof in my opinion. Front diffs are notably poor in the full time 4wd versions.

No experience with the V8"s, but have an 01 Cherokee with the 4.0, auto transmission, and the 4wd that"s hi - full time, hi- part time, and lo. Lets you shift in and out of high at will.
This girl has 256,000 on her without any real issues. I do take care of her, but bought at 31,000 used, so not sure what those miles involved. I did replace the head about 30k ago but that was due to the freeze plug going out in the back of the head. No good way to get at it without pulling the head. Figured while it was out I would replace (got a real good deal otherwise would have reworked it...)
4wd system works great for me, transmission is still tight. Still averaging 20mpg.
Check engine light has been on for 100k due to a slight miss that I can"t detect, but it seems to detect it.
For me, the size of the vehicle, the gas mileage, and the room behind the back seat, along with some very good 4wd capabilities - haven"t found anything else to match it.
So, for what its worth, I would grab another if I could.
Good Luck

Tony

I have a 98 same motor and everything same as the one we're talking about. The roof gasket on mine leaks, you can tell if yours leaks by lifting up the carpet and see if the floor is rusty. Previous owner, (a friend) said a part breaks in the front end. I think it was a part where the anti-sway bar attaches. The front differential makes a little noise but, been that way for years. My engine is the V8-318, they made it with the 360 too. It used premium fuel only. My check engine light stays on too, I went to Advanced Auto Parts and got the oxygen sensor, it takes two of them, $106.00 for both. Other than what I mentioned, It has 118,000 on the clock.I wouldn't trade it for a farm in Texas

If the Jeep you are looking at has a v8 then it is a Grand Cherokee which is totally different from the Cherokee. I prefer the Cherokee because it uses the Aisin Warner trans which is much better than the Chrysler trans used in the Grand. The Grand Cherokee was far from trouble free, but with some care people pile up lots of miles on them. As for the gas mileage, it isn't real good, but hey, if you want economy, buy a Metro. Watch out for front and rear axle noise because the Dana axles used in the Grand had issues in that year. Back in the day at the Chrysler dealership I worked at, I rebuilt or replaced lots of axles.
Hope this helps,
