trailer winch

I just bought a 23 foot tandem deck over beaver tail 12000 lb trailer for hauling tractors and cars or whatever comes up. Now I'm looking for a good quality winch for loading and unloading the trailer SAFELY. Can anybody recommend a heavy duty electric winch. At least 15000 lb rating. Thanks Dale.

I have a Ramsey 12,000LB RE model. I love the thing. There may be cheaper one"s out there, but you get what you pay for.

Dale, you won't go wrong with a Ramsey or a Warn. Question though is what will you be pulling on the trailer that needs that kind of capacity?

When you get them that big the wiring from the vehicle battery(s) is going to get pretty large (2/0 maybe), and put a serious load on your alternator during a long pull. It can be done, but you need to put some thought into how you are going to power the beast.

You could go with an 8K winch and use a snatch block to double the load. Slows things down a bit

15k lb winch on a 12k lb trailer? Doesn't make much sense to me. Get an 8k and a snatch block to go with it. I think you'll be surprised how easy stuff moves...and if it doesn't move, the winch will drag your truck and trailer to it.

I don't plan on loading anything heavier than 9000 lb's[9000 lbs Plus 3000lb trailer =12000 lbs] ,but what I've been reading I should go with a stronger winch. A 8000 lb rated winch is the max. and if the wheels aren't rolling for what ever reason or it's pulling up at a steep grade the weight multiplies. The snatch block will help as long as the cable is strong enough. Dale

I've got a 2,500 pound winch on my trailer that is similar to yours. I would have bought a larger capacity winch, but this one sort of "found me", and the price was right, so I bought it. The winch came with a snatch block, but even without the snatch block, the winch will still load a dead but rolling Farmall H easily. Yes, it surprised me also. I do have a 12 volt battery installed on the trailer to power the winch, and the trailer was hooked to my truck with the truck running, so that might have made the difference.

Yep, it"s mounted to the front of my 25-ft gooseneck trailer. I have it mounted about two feet up on the neck, making it easy for the cable to clear the back of the trailer when pulling a load. I keep a battery on the trailer, and have quick disconnect cables that I can hook to my truck for back-up power (when needed). I use my winch to load all my tractors, even running ones. I feel it"s much safer that way.

Get a Warn or Ramsey. They are rated at dragging dead weight not "rolling weight " as Chinese winches are. I will guarantee a 12,000 lb Warn or Ramsey will do anything you need it to do single line.
