not a tractor question

I own a fifth-wheel rv but am looking at buying a bumper pull type. What size ball do I need and are the bumper pull hitches different from regular trailer hitches? I am pulling it with a GMC 1/2 ton Z71.

I think most all are 2 5/16, but there are more knowledgeable people than myself on here. It's been awhile since we had a camper, but we had a 30' with an equalizer and it towed quite well.

You will need whatever ball size and type of hitch your new TRAILER requires.
The trailers weight dictates all these decisions including how much tow vechicle you will need.
An equalizing hitch is a good idea but will not make a superman out of your truck. BRAKES are the biggest factor.

In addition to what has been written so far, make CERTAIN that the ball shank diameter matches the receiver hole.

I use a old E250 van for utility towing, have a receiver hitch- the insert has 3 balls on it from 1 7/8, 2, 2 5/16 inch so can do a quick change for whatever. Little camper and smallest trailer have 1 7/8, the 10 foot light utility has 2 inch and the double axle 19 footer has the 2 5/16. Under a minute to remove pin, pull insert, rotate to needed ball size , reinstall, put back pin. Harbor Freight insert about $22.00 RN

Most all smaller camping trailers use a 2 1/2 inch ball hitch (and I agree an equalizing type is best), while only larger units use 2 5/16 SO SEE WHAT SIZE THE TRAILER USES AND MATCH ACCORDINGLY.

I prefer ball hitches with the larger shank size, say 1 inch versus the wimpy 5/8 or 3/4, and of course, a receiver to accept the same size, well DUH.

Good and properly adjusted trailer brakes (usually electric) are a must and good and properly inflated trailer tires.

I use the air bag helper lift on my 1/2 tom chev works well no equalizer hitch up to 6000 grose for me

Don't pull that 6000 lb trailer without a equlizer hitch. most truck manufacters recomend using a equlizer hitch with anything over 3000 lbs. if you don't belive me just check owners manuel. The equlizer hitch puts weight back on the steering axle for better control . Would also recomend a sway control. They can save you life "maby mine". Don't listen to these guys that pull 16000 with their FORD,Chev or Dodge. without the proper eqpt. I like my Life, truck and trailer better than that.

i sure hope thats a misprint there never seen a 2 1/2 ball :D

You need to find the camper you want and usually stamped in the tonque is ball size, buy that size.

If he got a different truck he may be having problems getting the hitch installed. Most places will not install a 5 wheel on a 1/2 ton truck.
