Pets and Summer Heat

Reading an article about a family that lost one of their pugs..they had kept the two inside all day and let them out in the afternoon after the backyard was completely shaded....not outside long but one of them died from the heat..

Pugs apparently have small nostrils and have a really hard time with high humidity...

As a FYI and

As a plea to the pet owners of the world...never leave a pet inside a car during the summer.....dog trainers temper your sessions...I know of a lab owner that lost a dog from too much retrieving....animal hemorrhaged and died...

They give so much and ask for so little....keep the outdoor pets within easy access to fresh water, or a wading pool...mine go under the home...10 degrees cooler there....

Several years ago we had a dog which was kept outside. In hot weather he would go swim across the small pond behind the house and come back and lay down under a large bush. When he got uncomfortable again, he would repeat the process.
My daughter now has a doberman-mix that stays in the house, and to be honest, I had never thought about it, but when an animal is used to air conditioning, heat affects them just like it does humans. Here in central N.C. the heat index is expected to top 100 today. Bubba will go out to . use the bathroom, but he does not want to play ball. After about five minutes he is ready to go back into the house.

My dog is an inside dog and always has been. He does go out and roam the yard,..sometimes for an hour or two. Today the heat index is above 100 degrees,..so it is inside for sure. Like they say,he"s family.

It is a bad idea to bring an outside animal in an air conditioned area and then put them back outside. Same in winter to "warm one up". That is no favor to the animal. Also, another rant, horses don't need blankets during the winter. They will adapt on their own to weather conditions without our help. Sweating under a blanket is harder on them then natural cover. Some people tend to baby their animals for their (people) own comfort but it only makes it worse on the animals.

Needless to say,my little friend leads a sheltered life.It is avg. around 104-108 degrees here after noon till 8pm, but the humidity is almost non existant, maybe 8% at the most. She likes her morning walk and her near dark walk, otherwise it"s in the AC for her and me.
