Remember a couple small ones when I was a kid but doubt they lived thru modernization. Any still in use in your areas? About 10 years ago, we were in southern bavaria and got off on some country roads and I spotted a smaller buggy size one off in the distance and supposed to be more. FF and the wife has some kind of class in that area Thursday morning. I took the day off and will go with her and take country roads back home. 180 miles on a 2 lane road oughta produce some nice pics.

Parke County Indiana claims to be the covered bridge capital of the world. There are approximately 31 covered bridges within the county. Rockville is the nearest town large enough to have hotels and other services, this is where I usually stay when visiting the area. There is the old jail hosue that is now a hotel if one would like to sleep in a jail - yes they give you the key and the bathroom is down the hall.

The website is: www.coveredbridges.com

Lancaster NH, where I grew up, has two. NH and VT both have many. The town where I live now just had material delivered to build one.

Many still left in PA. I grew up living near several and they are still used today. Check out the link for pictures.www.discoverlehighvalley.com/files/covered_bridge_revised.pdf

I saw a good show about covered bridges on P.B.S. this spring they talked about the developement history, construction, maintenance, and rebuilding of them, and sadly how a bunch of them have been lost due to vandalls burning them down I wish i could recall the name of the program for you it was a good show anyone see it?

Bridges of Madison County filmed in Winterset Iowa. Still several covered bridges around there. Sadly one was burned by vandals a few years ago. The reason for covered bridges, they felt it was cheaper to replace shingles when needed rather that replace the wood deck and supports.

here is a good site for any one interested in joining or just viewing photos of the bridges.there are more then one would think. my brother in law was the president of this group for a number of years. they take tours at different times of the years and view them in a caravan group and they can last for as much as a week or as little as two days.so here is the site http://www.coveredbridgesociety.org/..

Several an hour or so East of us in Lancaster County PA. One day when my wife and I were engaged or first married we took a map and went on a drive to see how many we could cross in a day.

I passed one while I was galavantin around before showing up at your place... Drove from aberdeen, MD to Niagara falls once and saw some real pretty country and several bridges.... Just something you wouldn't expect to find over here but I get surprised all the time.

Lancaster County is probably on a straight line between Aberdeen and Niagara. Might have have crossed paths there. Our trip was ~25 years ago.

Dave this site should bring back some memories for you. I live in Logan County, Ohio and have several bridges still in use in the county. One is about a mile from me on the same road I live on and still in use with a 12 ton limit

Sure does.....Thanks!! A am from athens county, the ones there and a couple from washington county are the ones that I remember.

There is one, in Fredrick, Co MD, maybe more, but I do remember going through one, on big pipe creek, on the way to a useless auction, one early morning.

I recently saw something on PBS that there were about 200 in New york and New England states, some still in the process of being rebuild. Think one little county in Mass has 5 or 6. I think the real deal will be the wooden last longer in salt conditions, but ya need to cover it all, a toss up dollar wise...
