O.T. AR 15 Olympia

I have a buddy that wants to sell his AR type rifle. 16 inch barrel with sling and 2 10? round mags for $700. I always wanted one but not sure if this is a decent deal. Any one have one and will it last over the years. Says 223/556 on it and it appears to be a clean firearm. Also, this depends on the better half, as we do not spend money like this without talking about it. My
wife is great, but should I look around first? I will only target practice with it. Thanks for the infor in advance. Any good or bad you can share on it. RON

I saw a olympia sell a couple weeks ago at auction,it had a fair scope.2-10 rnd mags,2-30rnd,i think 3-15?rnd,and maybe a couple more of whatever the stock mags were.ss bull barrel, nearly 400 rnds of ammo and looked to be in excellent shape.it brought $825.other than that i know absolutly nothing about them, but I thought that was a good price.I'm not really into that type of rifle ,but it would have been fun to play with. my brothers father in law had a ar that had been converted somehow to 22lr years ago.that thing would waste some shells in a hurry!

You need to go to a GOOD gun shop. While $700 was a "good" price a year or two ago you can buy "base" NEW Olympic Arms or DPMS AR10s for a little less than that today.

Olympic Arms puts a decent product and it has an excellent warranty, its generally thought ot be a step below Bushmaster and Colt and is priced accordingly. The thing you want to watch out for is if its a "Plinkster" model. Those are built cheaper and should be priced accordingly.

The external_link scare has finally worn off and the market is starting to settle back down again after a couple years of skyrocketing prices.

Just for pricing - I don't endorse these guys.

Is that Olympia a US made piece of equipment, or at least Swiss or German? I doubt it. I have never heard of an Olympia, I looked it up on gunbroker.com and there were none listed.
Search Yahoo and see where it is made, if it is made in the Orient it is likely low grade. A good AR-15 rifle that is made in the USA is a minimum $800, new. I have one, it costs me over a $1000. I have fired several types of ARs, Armalite, Smith-Wesson, Remington, Colt. They are fun to shoot but not cheap. Now the Sig Sauer is a premium rifle and so is anything made by H and K. Swiss and German. I would love to have a Sig 550 in my gun safe but $5000+ is hard to justify. (I need to save for my son's college education)
Keep this in mind, the AK-47 rifle that has been mass produced with over 50 million made all over the communist world and used extensively in the middle east is $300 or so brand new. But you get what you pay for. Accuracy is not as good as the other brands I mentioned.

Being a retired soldier I can say lots of bad things about the AR 15 platform. But for plinking they are a fine rifle. I'd suggest that you check out some of the gun forums, my son gets on them. One I can think of off hand is http://www.ar15.com. While you are there check out the forum for keeping in touch with deployed troops. SSG Nick Ranstad father is a member. I have the honor of knowing both Nick and his dad. Nick holds the sniper record shot for the US Army. His dad is a retired Navy SEAL. He send care packages to units serving in the combat zone. He spends some of his own money but gets donations through the site to offset some of the cost. That is also through AR15.com. They have also gotten donations of equipment form different mamufactures to send to the guys on the ground.

As far as price goes in my area almost any AR15 platform rifle is 800 or better used.

As far as the .22......many AR15 platforms out there that are .22 from the factory.

Excuse my post it should read AR15s - not AR10 (those are still a $1000+ or so new in any make).

Olympic arms are fine guns. All components are manufactured in Olympia, Washington, and the company has been around for about 60 years.
I just shot a similar rifle to what you are looking at Saturday. The individual who owns it loves it, and has never had any problems with it.
I'd try to talk him down on his price a little and all should be happy with the deal.

i bought a brand new DPMS AR15 with hard case, cleaning kit,and 2 30 round mags for $700. + tax last year at the local feed store...that dont sound like any kind of deal to me for a used rifle with no warranty of questionable origin.

Mr Guru. These guys here say they now make the whole rifle, years ago I think they were more famous for making just lower recievers, and 'you' built you own AR on it...nowdays they call it a platform?? humm - that's something Ron has to be warry of huh? A home built? how would you know without bringing it to a blackrifle expert? I tried making one once, what a stupid miserable project for so few pieces, then the old fashioned 3 rounds n'jam thing. I've been stuck on FN FAL's ever since.

Tony, they started calling it a platform becuase there are so many variants being built on the same reciever (AR15/M16/16A2/16A2/M4 ect). Not positive on numbers but besides 556 it is available in at least 20 different calibers without getting into the AR10 stuff.
