diesel suddenly started running poorly?

4 cylinder diesel with inline pump suddenly started running very poorly. Runs like an old car with really bad ignition points.Pops out exhaust and barely runs at a high speed, won"t run at a slower speed at all.Spits out a normal looking spray when an injection line is cracked. Can a pump jump time? If it was fuel starved, it would run better at a slower speed, right?

Not much to go on, especially the part about the ignition line, but I know what you mean and I'll still go with "that's the beauty of diesel, it's fuel." When my Ford 9000 did that last year it was the in-tank screen. it was flowing 1 drop per second, not quite enough.

I would check your fuel filters first and the fuel line and tank for water and flow. It sounds like its starved for fuel to me. I would check everything in the fuel system before I would do anything with the pump. You could have sheard the key on the pump but I dought it would run after doing this. Do the easy stuff first and check everything, Even the fuel shut off to the pump and tank. Bandit

If it happens to have a Simms inline inj pump have you changed/checked the oil in the inj pump crankcase lately? Have you check fuel flow from tank to filter?

Is your fuel cap properly vented? Had one covered in crud, tractor acted similar to your description.

I had issues with the Ford 5200 last week, was plugged fuel line. Hardly even dripped fuel.

Blew it out, but is a temp fix, as it started running 'funny' again 3 days later, will have to rip some stuff apart & get the tank cleaned up I guess?

The bolts for the timing plate adjuster were broken. The bolt stubs could still drive the pump but the timing was really delayed.
