O T;Garden tillers

My old tiller finally gave up. What is a good commercial type out there? I would like clock and counter clock like tines revolution and a Honda motor if possible. My old Toro was a good heavy one, but someone said the new ones are not as good as the old ones. Thanks.

I have an old Troy Bilt. Does good enough job for me. I've had about 30 of them over the years. I use to buy them when they needed work and then sell them. I had 4 new tillers and sold them too.

Our local new Holland dealer sells BCS tillers. I've never owned one, but I've heard good reports on them and they're a little pricey. Hal

The BCS is actually a two wheeled tractor that you can get a tiller attachment for. They are excellent in my opinion, based on my having used at Troy-bilt and a BCS w/tiller.

However it doesn't have the aforementioned counter-rotating tines, only forward rotating tines. They do turn faster than those on the Troy-bilt units.

The BCS uses gears and a clutch instead of belts.
Joel sells them at Earth Tools

I got a BCS as part payment for an estate I probated. I had used a Troy-Bilt for 30 years previous, and its up for sale now. BCS is much better. All gear drive, 3 speed transmission, and separate engagement lever for the tines. Has other attachments as well. I have a rotary (bush-hog type) mower, that I would like to sell. Need to put it on Craiglist, I guess.

Twice over the garden, and I'm done. Its heavy, and gives you a bit of a workout- but because of its weight, you can take a bigger bite without it running away.

If you get one, stay away from the old Acme engine. That was from Italy, and if it sounds similar to the Acme products Wile E. Coyote used, you might be right. The newer ones come with Briggs engines, and work great.

If you can find one up for sale, in your locale, Baretto makes the heaviest, toughest tiller, on the market. I got one on a electronic auction, this spring, it is a model 1320 tiller. These tillers are 100% hydraulic driven, and there is only 1 (enclosed in a wet gearbox) roller chain, that runs the axle. Mine tills deeper than my 42" TPH unit, on the Kubota tractor. The tine reel diameter is larger, giving the deeper penetration.
Google Baretto tiller, there are a couple of videos on youtube.

Honda has their own line of tillers now, one that does exactly what you want even. Where you can find one.... I don"t know, maybe a a commercial mower shop that has Honda mowers.

Are you dead set on a walk behind? A John Deere 200 series garden tractor with a 31 tiller makes a nice seed bed. The tractors are pretty much bulletproof and you can usually find the tractor and tiller together in the $700 range. If you wanted it is also pretty easy to mount a 1 bottom plow on for fall plowing.

DON'T buy a Poulan, that Blankety-blank thing had four different things break today. And I wasn't impressed by the B&S engine either. Stupid recoil unit is riveted on! Had to drill out the rivets after the cord broke, and then while trying to reattach the pull cord, the spring broke. That thing is gonna be a rifle target one of these days...

I think I mis-spelled the name, it's Barreto, and it's made in Washington state, if I am remembering right!

My BCS 205 has the Acme engine.Ive replaced the carburator drain and the starting rope in 15 years.Easy starting every time.Beats any B&S or Tecumseh engine Ive used.
