Looking to take family to a nice celebrationand I need you fellow readers to give me some ideas where to take them. I am in New York southern tier and would like to keep it in PA, NJ, VT, NH cause can't be away to long. Thanx in advance. Fred PS ;interest's are in tractors, parades, festivals and small towns.

My people skills dictate that I avoid crowds. So, faced with your situation, I'd fire up the grill and spend a nice (and safe) day with the family on the day. Then take a drive and make the loop of country roads in the area you mentioned. Splurge a little and swing down thru southern WV. Think the prettiest trip I made in your area was when me and a buddy drove from Aberdeen, MD to Buffalo, NY. Don't remember the exact roads but it was a beautiful drive (until we got to buffalo).

Enjoy the holiday.

Try Oneonta. Big community celebration with nice fireworks at night. Saratoga also has some nice fireworks shows.

Butler-Pa Big butler fair.......... Farm show------Rides-----demolition derby-tractor pulls- live country bands...near by lake arthur-western--pa

I know it's to far for you but each year we have a nice celebration at Redhill Va. at Patrick Henry's home. It's a very rural area and off the highway a bit. It's really good for the children to visit. You are standing on history there.

The environmental whackos are trying to stop fireworks demonstrations out in California. Seems the fireworks are being shot out over the ocean and some fish might eat some cardboard or something.

This country is going to the dogs! We need to declare open season on some of these idiots.

head down 81 and stay out near Winchester, Va. (birthplace of PAtsy Kline)cause it's cheaper than DC. Visit Harpers Ferry, The Air and Space Museum in Chantilly (Va) and the NRA Museum (close by Chantilly). Take the Metro from Sterling Va (about 45 minutes east of Winchester) into DC on the 4th, visit all the monuments (some are very moving) during the day (get over to the Pentagon to see the 9-11 memorial) and then take in the fireworks from the Mall. If you've got a bit more time, head down to the Fredburg area to see some Civil War battlefields and take in the Marine Corps museum in Qunatico. Or see Mount Vernon and Old Town Alexandia . STay away from the Eastern side of the Beltway.

Great Idea Dave ! Maybe we could come and crash your cookout, and when you do the drive around the Country we could go with you if ya take us on a hayride. 8>) Or would that be testing your people skills too much all in one day ??- LOL

Little bit closer to normal than that Gene, any spark, any hot- anything, can start a fire that burns hundreds, thousands of acres. I heard of a lawnmower hitting gravel, a catalitic converter shell into the side of the road, and the wad from a muzzle loader. i wouldn't want to be the guy that sent a sparkler into the bush... heavy fines, and jail time if someone gets hurt fighting it. Speaking of hot metal, Straasburg steam railroad, just west of Philly, east of 81, Amish country too, as nice a time as you could have in this weather, a couple 3 hours from southern tier????
