Out of season firewood question!

I have a 20x16 woodshed, about 10 to 13 feet high. Every year I stack the wood in it. This year I'm thinking of just filling the loader with split wood then just dumping the wood in the shed in a big pile? How would that season? Maybe better than a tight stacked pile! Just wanted to know if Anyone does it this way to save time stacking. Thanks, J

Dries better and saves one step in the handling of the wood, but does use considerably more space. Takes about twice as much room for the same amount of wood if it is dumped rather than stacked. If you have enough room, I'd do it.

Thanks, I figured it would take up more room. I just don't seem to have it me to stack 7 cords of wood again! Lol

Jay - I've done it both ways. Found split wood seasons a bit faster dumped randomly than when stacked tight. And of course it eliminates the labor to stack.

Downside is random wood takes up more space - you can't fit as much into the shed as when it's stacked.

Tip: If your shed has a dirt floor, cover the floor with old pallets or similar before dumping the wood to keep the bottom of the pile off the ground.

Thanks, I have 6 inches of #2 crushed stone, with pallettes on top of that. I think that's what I'm gonna do, just dump it and be done. If I dont like it, I can stack it next year.

Thanks, me too, waiting for dry weather. Have u even got to use your discs yet? Very few guys got corn in around here. I haven't even planted my garden yet, just spinach!

It wont take twice as much space.I used to buy a half cord of oak edgings out of a pipe rack.It fit level when stacked in my pickup. When the same pile was sawed to stove length and thrown back in the truck it rounded up a bit. There is shrinkage when you saw wood to length too.

dad plowed 2 weeks ago (maybe 3 now) on a wed., thought we'd be able to disc friday, pullled 'em about 50 feet, pulled real nice, cut nice but we were getting plugged w/ mud in the driest part of the field...so...they still sit...
probably going to have to plant our hay/oat closer to fall...getting a littlke too late...no big deal...everything else is growing like crazy

garden is still un-tilled...un-planted...

stoneybrook farm (next to holloway's) was chopping haylage yesterday...

getting lots done in the house though...it is a tradeoff...

Hello jayinny,
I think when the wood if stacked will season better.
I keep mine stacked and covered outside.
I use blocks to keep it off the ground.
It works for me..........................Guido.

I built an 8ft. x 22ft. wood shed, divided in the middle---one bay for this winter, the other for next winter. Building is 7ft. tall with a tin roof. Used hog panelling to cover the studs all way around, except for four openings on the access side. This allows room to simply throw the split pieces in, and to retrieve the wood in the winter. Allow two summers for drying. Works well. Oh, and the floor is old barn boards on top of treated 4 x 4's.
