Tried this on the deere forum,no response,

Manual calls for sae 90 weight gear oil in the transmission on my model 60 2 cylinder tractor. Will it make a difference if its GL-1 or GL-5. Bill M.

YES! Do Not use GL5. It has additives that will eat up the brass bushings in the transmission.

Use GL1 only and you will have no troubles.

The same question keeps getting asked every couple of days. People get tired of answering the same topic all the time.
You could have done a search and found hundreds of answers in 30 seconds.
Use any gear lube labeled "yellow metal friendly".

kinda funny,I try to visit this site daily, dont remember seeing this question that often otherwise I wouldnt have asked.suprised I didnt get the 1-800 number for Deere manuals,no wait,I do have the manual but being that it was printed 60 years ago it doesnt cover GL-1 vs. GL-5.If this question was asked 15 times or so in the last 30 days kindly post links to these questions as I didnt see them!Bill M.

Are you sure to use only GL-1 oil? I thought the higher the number the better the oil I think I have GL-7 or so in it now, will that hurt the brass parts in the trans, more info is greatly appreciated.
