Belgian Saddle Horse......

Has anyone else seen a Belgian saddle horse? Our daughter, Amy, rode this guy a week or so ago near Monticello, VA.

Amy was in a group going horseback riding. When they walked out to the horses, Amy said she saw this fellow and wondered who was going to ride him. Guess who.

She said he was a well behaved horse, but he had a habit of straying off course and eating leaves off of trees if you didn't keep him on a short rein.

BTW, his name is "Dragon".

Nope. She's smaller than that. In fact, she said she had to stand on something to get a foot in the stirrup.

my dad was from a big family and all the kids that needed to go to school rode the same horse-- one bridle no saddle and some times 5 kids--2 miles unless the cut thru the middle of the section- and they did that a lot--it was a big horse of course!!

I ride my Belgian.I horse is a horse. They are very gentle horses.

A lot of the farmer around here used Belgian work horses because they where multi purpose. Also many used Morgan the same way, a light/faster work horse. Grand Dad always had Percherons for the heavy work and Belgians for the light work. When they had all horse power he had over twenty horses on the farm. Used to run six horse teams plowing. Work one until lunch and another in the afternoons. My Grand Dad came home from school at lunch just to change the harness while the men eat their lunch.

The draft horses have been seeing a rise in popularity as saddle horses. I"m told their size makes for a smooth ride.

Its now easy to find saddles with draft horse trees, draft bridles, etc.

I"ve seen one in my trail ride circle, but never ridden one.

Like riding on the couch.............. If we weren't breeding quarterhorses and just had a couple to ride, they'd be coldbloods of some kind. Our gelding is mixed and has some cold blood enough to make him big, you can ride all day without a saddle and be just as comfortable as with one.
